American Afternoon with Marc Maron – Thursday, May 8, 2008

Listen: Marc Maron and Robert Reich
Air America Radio welcomes back Marc Maron for his 2nd day this week in the guest host chair. Lots to talk about today from this week’s primaries and the question of when or if should Hillary Clinton drop out and back Barack Obama to high gas prices and how we are all dealing with it. Maron will be taking your calls in HOUR ONE on all the above topics.
Maron’s guest in HOUR TWO will be Matt Taibbi. Taibbi is a journalist and political writer. He currently works at Rolling Stone where he authors a column called "Road Rage" for the print version, and an additional weekly online-only column called "The Low Post". He is best known for his coverage of the 2004 US presidential election, and for his former editorial positions at newspapers the eXile, the New York Press, and the Beast. Recently, Taibbi has been a regular contributor to Real Time with Bill Maher.
Rounding out HOUR THREE will be author Ted Fishman. Fishman’s essays and reports have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Money, Harper’s, Worth, Esquire, USA Today, GQ, Chicago magazine and Business 2.0. His commentaries have been featured on Public Radio International’s Marketplace. A former floor trader and member of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, he ran his own trading firm until 1992. His current book is called “China Inc.”

Give Him a Show!!
I am just listening to the podcast from Tuesday, and Ive got to say that its refreshing to hear Marc back on the air and hitting his stride as if he never was gone!
His interviewing technique, grasp of the issues, and interaction with callers is excellent. If you gave him some staff he might even get to do some of the funny.
This is a great spot for him, as is morning or night...so give him a freakin' show already!!
And while you're at it...how about giving Sam Seder the 5 days a week that we all know is the perfect for him?!
How lucky is Air America to have these two great talents out there ready to take over the morning slot that Lionel will hopefully vacate, like, now, and the empty afternoon slot that is in question right now?! So lucky!!
Do yourselves a favor, give them time and a little money, and the public will reward you with ratings!

okay, here's my proposal for great radio. Two hours of Marc, then an overlap with Sam for an hour, then two hours of Sam. Fantastic passionate pontificating, leading into them bouncing ideas off of each other, leading into Sam's common sense, crazy smart, informative talk radio. Both are great at interviews, both are entertaining in their own ways. They've already proven they work well together. Bonus, you've added 5 hours of programming to your now mostly empty schedule.

I'm down with that! 5 great hours of programming - already in AAR's backyard. DO IT!

By starfarfelMay 8, 2008 - 2:11pmWill Air America kick ass again?
Listening to American Afternoon this week makes me think that the crackheads who took over Air America have gone off their meds - because the show has been great. I agree with KthC, Seder and Maron are fantastic. Let's hope that AAR keeps these guys on the air, though I won't hold my breath.

By mrboffoMay 8, 2008 - 2:33pmThis is a GREAT idea. I love
This is a GREAT idea. I love both Sam and Marc. They are both radio naturals, yet they are so different in terms of how they approach their programming, and I truly, honestly appreciate both. SInce I've watched their joint podcasts I believe that their minds work too differently to successfully do a joint program (I think they'd both find it frustrating, particularly Marc) but one hour a day would be nice. Otherwise, just give them two different slots. Personally, I think Marc would be great in the evenings because of his thoughtful and more "big picture" analyses and riffs, and Sam would be best in the morning (or afternoon), due to his high energy level and impeccable ability to stay right on top of the latest news and events.
If you put these guys back on five days a week, I'd continue my premium membership. If neither of them is kept on the air, forget it. I'm gone, after four loyal years.

Brilliant idea - that overlap - we just need to make it a 6 hour package - because that is how AAR runs its weekly shows.
so, 2, 2 overlap, 2 would work perfectly.
Marc has really been a joy to hear back on air, and his view of the world from the inside out - added to Sam's view - from the outside in makes this the perfect match.
Inspired idea...Glad to read it.

Has anyone noticed that Maron/Seder/Maddow have been getting 50+ largely positive comments on their blogs while Lionel gets about 3~5 comments in any given day?
Attention AAR Management! This blog is a great feedback mechanism. You should use it to finetune your programming.

By mikes_tkyMay 9, 2008 - 2:08amMarc is amazing - GIVE HIM A SHOW!!
I really hope that AAR can someday learn from past mistakes and REWARD THE TALENT! Marc Maron is a uniquely talented host. I listen to him whenever he's on - whatever network. If he had a show, you'd have me listening and/or podcasting daily.
"Morning Sedition" belongs in the Smithsonian. If the archives were for sale, I'd buy them. What was I thinking not saving those podcasts back then? Morning Sedition was like a good drug - I used to wake up early just to lie in bed and listen.
I have called, emailed, posted, and even IM'd a tech support guy asking that my message of "WE WANT SAM!" be passed to the PTB. AAR already 'created' two great hosts in Maron & Seder. Let us listeners hear what we desperately want - PLEASE. Enough with the "auditions". You know what you need to do.

Well AAR you really are in a bind on this. Ideally I think what you would do is put Sam in at Noon and get Tom Hartmann out of there, who is unfortunately a sleeper (no offense Tom but you just don't deserve the Noon slot right now). Then you put Maron in at 3. HOWEVER, because AAR botched things with Randi, the 3pm slot is fiercely competitive and I don't think Maron is witty or lively enough to stem audience bleeding to Randi. Sorry Mark, this is just how I see it. Sam however has an awesome loyal following and that audience will stick to AAR if its Sam vs Randi. So I think it probably would make more sense for AAR business wise to put Sam at 3 and find another place for Maron so as to stop the 3pm bleeding. I don't think Maron can handle the noon slot.
Now, if you really want to think big, call up Rosie O'Donnell and work a deal with her to take over the noon slot. She could kick serious ass there. O'Donnell at noon with Sam at 3 would serve AAR very well me thinks.

By gpo6May 8, 2008 - 3:13pmMaybe, so what?
Ever said anything in anger you either wish you could take back, or circumstances change so your response is no longer valid? Ever said you'd never again eat white-GMO-MonSatan-derived bread but one day were hungry and that was all being offered at the free lunch place? BTDT, more than once: some days I give it away, some days I keep for later hunger pangs, some days I eat it, sometimes it makes it to the compost.
Besides, maybe this exposure is just an "on air interview" for, say, NovaM?
Not to mention Marc is nothing if not erratic and flexible, and in his own words "untethered." Get over it dude. Did I ever say I'd never listen to AAR again? Yep. Then who shows back up, Sam and Marc! Well, as it turns out, AAR won't stream for me, so I listen from an affiliate, but do I have to buy from their advertisers? Only if I want their product as was the case of the Celtic salt ad here the other day, and if it might help the number counters consider hiring Marc and/or Sam.
Maron is a gifted philosopher comedian truthteller. He's a modern day Lenny Bruce. Mark my words; Marc his words. He cares, he feels, he ponders, he defies stereotypes, and has a damn fine recipe for Shaker lemon pie.
Could it be you're someone who once supported W and his evil war plans? It takes a big person to say "I was wrong." It takes a thinking person to work to right the wrongs one's words or deeds perpetrated on innocents. Marc hasn't harmed a soul; can you say that? Marc gives solace to other displaced and discarded folks; can you say that? Marc provides humor and thought-provoking moments for the downtrodden, the masses; can you say that? But thanks for your petty little remark that allowed me to respond. Yeah, thanks. Srsly.

So glad to hear Marc on the radio again. Like Stephi, I used to wake up early to listen to Morning Sedition, and would even put off my shower until the show was over...(but I would take a shower eventually). Give him a show.
I'm bummed because I love the way the show's going today, but I have to sign off to do work that needs my attention.
Love the idea of the Sam and Marc overlap.

By Scout FinchMay 8, 2008 - 3:51pmOk the assertion about Myanmar is crazy
Mark's suggestion that the junta in Berma (Myanmar) is not allowing aid into the country to protect the struggling masses from exploitation by American robber barons is preposterous. This is a country where the junta violently cracked down on democratic protests in both 1988 and 2007. Its a preposterous suggestion to suggest the junta is the good guys protecting the people from evil Americans is conspiracy theory crazy and undermines other rational and justifiable criticisms of US foreign policy.

By el_cidMay 8, 2008 - 4:54pmCorrupt System
I wouldn't call it corruption. I mean, corruption takes place, but what's far more significant is what's not corrupt. Like ramming through NAFTA the way they did. That was not corrupt. Fighting the Vietnam War was not corrupt. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 gave away maybe a hundred billion dollars' worth of publicly owned property -- namely the digital spectrum -- to a few megacorporations. That wasn't corrupt. It was highway robbery on a
massive scale, but… not corrupt.

By Wellstone DemocratMay 8, 2008 - 5:13pmDon't Let him get away this time!
I like the idea of Marc and Sam having their own shows for 2 hours each and over lapping each other for 1 hour. MorningSedition was my favorite show, I had never listened to a radio talk show before I found them. I dragged my husband and son (who was around 9 years old) to the broadcast at City Bakery at 6:00 am to see my guys (including Kent Jones/Lawton Smalls). I used to hang out in my car at times (only place I could get reception) in order to hear some of the show. What an imaginative, unique show it was. Maybe some of the other clever guys, like Jim Earle and Kent can contribute again if Marc comes back. Lets hope that AAR rights a wrong and rewards the talented guest and infrequent hosts (like Marc and Sam) that have this loyal and vocal fan base with regular shows. If not, I bet Nova M would welcome them as they have with Mike Malloy (another treasure that AAR let get away).

By noraMay 8, 2008 - 5:38pmHey--Marc -- Some China facts
Facts about China that astound--
o Both the British East India Company (early fascist imperialists) and key families of the American Boston Brahmin ilk destabilized the Chinese culture prior to attempts to colonize by means of importing opium from Afghanistan. That's the cause of The Opium Wars. (The Rich Families of the Boston area had gotten rich in the sugar and slave trade and when the slave trade collapsed they looked to the East for a new moneystream and found it in what we call today 'illegal drug trafficking'! Note that these American drug lords are the source of the Bush Family's skill in gaming this moneystream.)
o The Chinese created the most astounding irrigation complex the world has ever known (but unfortunately China's leaders seem to not to understand that the system made possible centuries of agricultural success and have instead now turned to stupid things like giant dams that creat cesspools of stagnant water covering once farm-able land!)
o The Chinese were wise recyclers for centuries, renewing the fertility of their agricultural lands by collecting "night soil" and enriching the farmland with it. ('Night soil" is human solid waste, that is poopy. Unlike the Chinese, we flush all our human fecal matter and so are polluting the our coastal waters, etc., and cannot seem to unplug ourselves from flush-it-and-it-is-gone myth about what should happen to waste of all kinds, organic or synthetic. Practices that made it possible for China to exist for centuries are now being abandoned by the Chinese as they adopt America's flush-it mindset; just plain sad that what is destroying us will even destroy the previously sturdy Chinese!)

By artmensorMay 9, 2008 - 3:41pmAtheists do this and that
Yes I like Marc too..
Below.. show corrections.. and..
I am annoyed at the guest that lumped atheists into one category.. We atheists disagree on a range of issues.. I hope I mishead that atheists want to nuke muslims.. That was plain stupid.. I know for a fact the vast majority of atheists do not hold thias opinion.. I have noted however that the media seems to put the microphone in front of odd ball atheists with controversial views (which dies a disswervice to the community by making people hate all atheuists)..
MARC.. you said the number for you show too quick (so I couldnt get it).
SOME CORRECTIONS:
Someone said : Hitler did not kill Jews with Jesus... it was occult stuff.. Incorrect.. Hitler has always been a Catholic (to quote him). Hitler signed agreements with the Pope (which is why tithing is still going on today in GErmany)..
Einstien was mentioned.. Einstein was an atheist (by most peoples definitions).. You can quote the dictionary and make a case he was not (indeed he said he was not).. But Einstein did not believe in an afterlife, or gods, etc.. Einstein did use religious language, which confuses people if they do not know the context..
