Today on Doing Time - Wednesday August 20th

Congressman Ed Markey, Chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, will join Kuby to talk about why Republican whining about drilling is misguided. Did you know that the US is exporting oil every day? If we stopped, then drilling wouldn’t even be in debate. We export nine times what drilling could possibly yield. So why are Republicans griping about drilling? Markey will explain.

If you have any doubts about who is spying on you and who is spying on “the enemy” your just like every other law abiding American. Now that the Defense Department is expanding their intelligence operations, there’s another ackroynym with wire tapping authority and we want to know what’s behind it and why the government needs another one. Mike Scheuer, ex CIA agent and all around intelligence community expert will try to shed some light on the shady world of espionage.

40 YEARS LATER
There's been a lot of talk about protests at this year's Democratic convention and we ask – why? Should the masses assemble at the steps of the Republican machine? Is it just that Denver will be more fun so protestors are flocking there? We'll look back in history to the Chicago10 and the shocking protests at the 1968 convention. We'll be talking with Bobby Seale founder of the Black Panther Party and Paul Krassner, founder of FreeThought Magazine – about convention protests.

TORTURE
What is torture? Who better to tell us than a psychologist? But psychologists have been debating what constitutes complicity in aiding torture. Should they assist the military in developing interrogation methods? Dr. Bryant Welch says no! He's pushing his peers to make helping the military torture a violation of their professional code of ethics. We'll hear how that's going.

THE VEEPSTAKES
The NY Times has narrowed the field of potential Democratic VP choices to three.
We'll do the cursory speculating but you may change your mind once you hear why Kuby supports his choice.

Will McCain have an advantage because he won't be announcing his VP until after the Democratic Convention?

THE PURPOSE DRIVEN CANDIDATESBoth Presidential candidates pandered to the evangelicals this weekend. Did you like seeing their religious sides? Do you think they have to show their love for Jesus to get elected? And if so, should they do more of it?

CAMPAIGN TRAIL

Tomorrow, McCain and Obama will meet with “values voters” at the Saddleback Mega-church in California. They will talk on issues important to evangelicals in  hopes of winning their votes, though both candidates hold positions that these voters are not entirely fond of. Ron will keep you posted.

Meanwhile, Jerome Corsi’s new book: Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality is getting some attention. The Obama camp has already sent out a rebuttal, called “Unfit for Publication”. Ron will talk to Media Matters Senior Fellow Paul Waldman about the book and pick apart the false statements and accusations within.

RUSSIA GEORGIA

The struggle continues as peace talks fizzle. Russian tanks push deeper into Georgia, and the Georgian President now calls on McCain, who yesterday said, “We are all Georgians now”, to walk the walk.
