Today on Doing Time- Tuesday, August 26th

By Victoria Hippel

And their off! The gavel fell yesterday with Chair Howard Dean calling the Convention to order. With that came a flurry of activity, from our airwaves to you! Michelle Obama headlined in a speech that focused on her family values and her history, while ailing Senator Ted Kennedy gave a rousing speech on party unity and passing the Dem torch to this new generation of leaders.

While details are fuzzy, it has been reported that a possible assassination plot has been thwarted by Denver police, via some meth addicts with high range rifles. There are four suspects in custody, one jumping from a hotel window to evade capture. Ron will keep you posted on this.

While the fanfare in Denver proceeds, GOP henchmen are doing anything and everything to steal some press and cause some rifts. McCain, for his part was on Leno last night, gaffing and joking about his age. His camp is also letting rumors fly that he may announce his VP choice before Friday, seemingly in an effort to get some attention his way, though we’ll see how well that works. Ron will bring you up to speed on the latest plots and plans.

Tonight will feature Hillary Clinton as the keynote speaker. Will this help to heal the divide that continues to threaten party unity? McCain takes full advantage of this in yet another ad, this on called “Debra” in which a supposed Hill supporter is now backing the Maverick… Ron will talk on how to best proceed and take your calls and suggestions.

And while the Dem Convention is news, there are other things happening in the world- we kid you not. Ron will round up the days news with stories from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq and Georgia (where Cheney is on his way to spread the peace and the love).

All this and continuing coverage from the floor of the Convention with pop ins from Congressmen Senators, delegates and an interview with incredible musician John Legend!!

88 years ago today the USA became a democracy

Eighty-eight years ago the United States of America joined 26 other countries, including the Muslim republic of Azerbaijan, in granting women the right to vote. I look back in awe to the women at the Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention in 1848 who dared to demand the right to vote, along with many other rights.
Susan B. Anthony spent 50 years of her life crisscrossing this country by train, horse and buggy, and horse-drawn sleigh. Speaking anywhere and everywhere she could on the “natural rights” of women and rarely spending more than one full day in any one place. When she voted in 1872 she was arrested and charged with voting illegally even though she had registered to vote. The judge would not allow her to speak at her trial, he refused to allow the jury to render an opinion, and he found her guilty.
Alice Paul led the suffragists who picketed the White House starting in 1916. They held up banners that quoted President Wilson's speeches on democracy and asking why he refused to back voting rights for women. They were accused of treason by the pundits of the time. They were beaten by mobs while the police looked on or the women themselves were arrested. They were held in jail for days without being allowed to contact anyone outside. Their friends and lawyers who tried to locate them were lied to by the police and jail officials. They were given months of prison time. Some were beaten by their jailers, some were put in solitary confinement. They went on hunger strikes, and were force fed. When word of their treatment eventually leaked out public opinion changed from derisiveness to outrage at their treatment and admiration for their courage. And in 1920 President Woodrow Wilson, who had fought tooth and nail against it, signed the 19th Amendment into law.
Because of the strength and courage of these women and hundreds of thousands like them I can never take voting rights lightly. No barriers to voter registration, all registered voters must be allowed to vote, and all votes must be counted.

Not enough Bush/ McCain?.. just wait for Joe.

" if this race is about family Obama.. and not Bush/ McCain ... they will lose.."

excellent point ron.. this can't be " Barack ,, this is your life "
" it's not just feeling comfortable about Obama.. but feeling UNCOMFORTABLE about McCain "

However, last night was important and necessary and it was just day one.

Don't worry Ron .. the Obama camp has intelligent people. They know painting the Bush/ Mcain picture is one of their best pieces of ammunition they have

We saw this employed effectively by Biden on Saturday, I think he said Bush/ McCain 36 times
I'm sure we'll see ALOT more of this.
Joe really hit McCain over the head with the kitchen table leg.

Fox news video pool coverage

Last night I listened to Michelle Obama the speech on NPR and it truly moved me by her words and her story. This morning I watch the same speech and was disturbed by Fox news video pool coverage. If I had only watched the speech I would have been left with the impression that the If I only attending the speech on television was a bunch of board white people and a few happy black people. How could the democrats let the partisan hacks @ fox control the images seen at their convention.

Convention strategy

I think last night was tone perfect (except for Nancy Pelosi, who came off like the hostess obsessed with making sure everyone has champagne before the ball drops), but I think tonight it's time to attack. Let Mark Warner make a bi-partisan pitch (he is helping swing Va. into the blue), but there are plenty of conservatives who are not happy with the Bushies and McCainaanites. Attack the crap policies, and assure the principled conservatives that their views will get a fair airing — and reinforce the truth that a lot of their anger is shared by us. Obama's been running on that since day one.
