Saturday, March 26
The right-wing rampage continues and we ask, where is the care and caring in America?
As much of the media marched lock-step with Terri Schiavo's power-obsessed champions, what was missing this week? Let's start with hearing from disability rights advocates and the real record of the White House and Congress on disability issues. Then there is W's silence after the Red Lake school shootings. And Florida Gov. Jeb Bush finally earns the title, big brother, after sending a state police posse to kidnap Terri Schiavo. If local police were brave enough to stop the Bush mob - and they were - how come congressional Democrats keep going along with GOP demogogues?
We'll hear from MARY JOHNSON, editor of Ragged Edge Magazine. She'll articulate the disability rights' movement's agenda beyond Terri Schiavo. GOP lawmakers oppose most of it, like the full implementation of the Americans' With Disabilities Act. We'll also hear from Georgetown University student activists who won a rise in campus workers' wages after a hunger strike. And PATRICK FARRELLY and KATE O CALLAGHAN, producers and directors of the HBO documentary, LEFT OF THE DIAL, about Air America Radio which premiers this week.
- March 26, 2005

So now it's "All Schiavo, ...
So now it's "All Schiavo, All The Time" in the corporate media. A brain dead 24 hour news cycle obsessed with a brain dead woman and the brain dead people who want to keep her shell alive. The Republican machinations to pump up their brain dead base using Terry Schiavo's undead body borders on the criminal while the Democrats, too cowed or too complacent, twiddle their thumbs and wait for the subject to turn back to Social Security.
Well, execept for one Democrat. When the Republican's were putting their bill on the midnight train though Congress we were treated to the delicious irony of Barney Frank, an openly gay Democrat, standing up to denounce the bill, a bill that tries to abrogate the rights of a married man. The fact that a gay man stood up to defend marriage, an institution to which he is not entitled, is even stranger than the fact that he belongs to a party whose tepid "civil unions" stance on gay marriage is even now being quietly shunted into political limbo.
Meanwhile the world moves on; Schiavo or no Schiavo. Anti-war protests from coast to coast and around the world barely registered a blip on the national media's radar. More attention was paid to grandmaster chess champion and paranoid loon Bobby Fisher's immigration to Iceland than to the hundreds of thousands of relatively sane people who turned out to protest an insane war.
The only other story vying for media attention is straight from the "if it bleeds, it leads" file. In Red Lake, Minnesota, another teenager went on another shooting rampage and managed to dent the Schiavo obsessed press for awhile. But don't hold your breath waiting for any meaningful reporting on it. Not while a Schiavo remains uninterviewed. You might wind up in a coma.

How long did Clinton wait to talk about Columbine?? I bet he talked about it later that day..oh but I forgot he's evil.
I am so sick of people on the right saying things like "Does the left hate Bush so much they are cheering on the death of Terry Schaivo because it isn't what Bush wants"
Its like they TOTALLY forgot about the hatred of Clinton--how the right was cheering on HIS death when he had heart surgery. Rush said he didn't die because there was no room in Hell.

Surely the decision to bring Springer on board is the new CEO's doing. I can see where he's coming from. Springer will draw in a lot of listeners which will in turn bring in dollars which in turn will entice more markets to pickup AAR.
It's a good business decision but Unfiltered is a quality program. I guess that's why Lizz bugged out a couple weeks ago. Was there ever any official word on that? Still, there's nothing Springer can do that will compare to the quality of Rachel's insight.
Man if they put Rachel on from 1-4 on Sat and Sun that means I'll be listening to AAR for 9 hours straight.

because the fact is that we as a society and as individuals are always making decisions to protect some people and leave others to suffer, the author makes a case for keeping Schaivo complex while still hating the cynical and exploitative politics around it.

What I'm about to say is NOT meant to be at ALL insensitive to Ms. SCHIAVO's predicament, nor the Already FEEDING Tube Deprived Baby, Sun HUDSON, for that matter, BUT, FASTING Self Depriving of (some) food for RELIGIOUS Purposes, IS A well-KNOWN REligious Practice, from Buddhism to BA'HAI, to Catholicism, to Protestantism, to Hinduism, all the way to ZORASTRAINISM, Fasting, this practice IS Accepted, worldwide, deprivation of one's food(Closely MONITERED, OF COURSE, by Health ProfessionalS, as POLITICAL Fasts{Dick GREGORY, a Former Guest on Laura's show, etcetera]should be as well), this IS a RELIGIOUSLY Driven Practice, throughout history!
FASTING also can be highly effective for nHEALTH reasons, to cleanse one's body of TOXICITY, for the Very SHORT TERM< only, of course, and to sometimes reverse the bodily imbalances that can cause conditions like DIABETES(Fasting, HAS helped me with this condition, etcetera), by restoring the Body's METABOLOC IMBALANCES, BACK INTO a More Balanced State, AGAIN.
E.G., WIKEPEDIA online, describes the HINDUIST Religious fast, Performed on the hindu HOLY DAY of "Ekadasi(the 11th day of each lunar fortnight) as being, IF observed strictly{and again ALWAYS have Health ProfessionalS Monitoring orr READY to Monitor you condition, if you choose to fast for a day or more, especially]. t
This EKADASI fast, "Involves taking no food or water from the previous day's sunset until 48 minutes after the following day's sunrise." (Source-Wikepedia, at URL Address: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/fasting )

Important Soc. Sec. point--can't be repeated too often; payout on personal accounts plus benefits will be MUCH LOWER than it would be if nothing is done. It's called projection. Taking your own worst characteristics and putting it on those you oppose. Mark Crispin Miller in "Cruel and Unusual" points out that Republican thinking is heavily based on projection and how they act is exactly what they accuse their opponents of doing.

On the Dem side, well, it wouldn't look to kick up a ruckus about Schiavo while the dem leadership is trying to quietly drop their pro-choice position at the same time.

This administration wants as many "groups" in the country divided as much as possible. If we are fighting with eachother they are free to do as they please.

Actually you should call him Dr. "Cat killer" Frist. His diagnosis was probably as accurate as John Edwards (the talk show host, not the senator).

Important Soc. Sec. point--canÂ’t be repeated too often; payout on personal accounts plus benefits will be MUCH LOWER than it would be if nothing is done. Not that the Bushies have actually put out a plan, but they have admitted that private accounts donÂ’t do anything to address the projected shortfall anyway. That first caller was full of the stuff that makes grass grow greener.

Oh yes, let me join the chorus here on congratulating AAR. There is something in each program that I can appreciate. Thank you!!
As so many have said already, they are the pint of water in that arid desert. (Hopefully it will be a gallon before long.)

Don't get me wrong, I don't want the Dems to take everything lying down, I was just talking about this particular broohaha. And the idea of Dr. Dean speaking up about the medical drivel coming out of Frist does seem like a good one.

Well what Dr. Dean could have said is that as a medical professional, diagnosing someone from a video tape should get your license yanked.
I think it's really time to take the gloves off with the rethugs anywhere we can.
God knows they never give us a break. Ever.

It's pretty likely that the Social Security bill, if anyone ever presents one, isn't going to pass. I wasn't trying to say that there is a real problem coming our way in 2042, since that was based on a ridiculously low growth rate--and in fact the boomer (I'm one too) who said we'll be dead by then is right anyway. I'm just saying that if there is to be a shortfall, it won't be as bad as it would if the private accounts happen.
At this point, it could be that Social Security is yet a bigger smokescreen for such real problems as Medicare/Medicaid and the horrendous budget that's coming.

OK, Laura;
I have a number of 3x5 cards in my purse on which I have attached copies of questions and answers that I got from the Demopratic Party about Social Security. I use them and their facts to answer any questions I am asked about Social Security. We could all do something like this. Especially since I don't watch the network news either.
