Veterans Group Calls on Congress to Impeach George W. Bush and Richard Cheney

ST. LOUIS--On March 30, a national veterans organization called for the removal of President George W. Bush and Vice-President Richard Cheney for crimes the group charges were committed during the invasion and occupation of Iraq.
In a letter sent to each member of the US House and Senate, Veterans For Peace (VFP) stated that ...This administration war on Iraq, in addition to being increasingly unpopular among Americans, is an unmistakable violation of our Constitution and federal law which you have sworn to uphold. In our system, the remedy for such high crimes is clear: this administration must be impeached.

David Cline, a decorated Vietnam War combat veteran and VFP president, said in a prepared statement to the press, "We do not make this call lightly and as former members of the US armed forces, we take our responsibilities as citizens very seriously. For that reason we believe that when our government conducts a war of aggression on Iraq and commits a growing and appalling series of what must legally be considered war crimes and crimes against humanity in the execution of that war, it violates Article VI of the US Constitution, the War Crimes Act of 1996 (18 U.S.C. 2441), and numerous international treaties which are legally binding on our nation."

Cline continued, "We are not the first group to call for impeachment. We have decided to add our voice to the call. All the reasons given for the invasion have shown themselves to be half-truths or misleading. The conflict continues to drag on taking the lives of our soldiers and innocent Iraqis. It is clear that George Bush does not intend to change course in an effort to right this great wrong. He has had enough time in his second term to begin a shift and he has not. It is time to remove him from office."

Veterans For Peace is seeking individual and organizational supporters to work jointly on the effort to impeach the resident.

The tragic case of Terri Schiavo writes a new chapter in the ongoing American saga that is often titled “the culture war.” It’s no longer just about a so-called “right to life.” The Christian right insists that it’s about a “culture of life.” They’ve been waving that slogan around for years. Now mainstream America is getting used to it. Those of us who actively oppose the Christian right had better get used it, too. We’re going to be hearing a lot about this “culture of life” from now on.

“Culture of LIFE?” we ask, with justified outrage. These same people who claim to be the guardians of life are the first to demand the death penalty for murderers, indiscriminate bombing for Afghanis, Iraqis, and anyone else they don't like, etc., etc. The hypocrisy is so blatant, it hardly seems worth spelling out the details.

Spreading democracy is one thing. But do we really want America to be known for spreading the pricing practices of our drug companies?

In Guatemala, the United States has become the sales rep for the pharmaceutical industry. Citing urgent public health concerns, the Guatemalan legislature enacted a law last year that permitted the marketing of generic drugs alongside their brand-name equivalents. Citing the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), whose ratification congressional committees will begin to consider next week, the U.S. trade representative then told the Guatemalans that any such drug legislation would stop CAFTA dead in its tracks. If the five Central American nations (plus the Dominican Republic) that had signed CAFTA wanted it ratified, Guatemala would have to repeal the new law. Reluctantly, Guatemala obliged.

I still think some of the appeal of the right IS its ability to distract people with these endless issues around death, which of course terrifies Americans who have no culture that can deal with it.

The right is death obsessed. They are rigid with fear in general and death in particular

I think they're Sirius only. They must think everyone who has a Sirius unit is rich. I guess they didn't do the research.

GUATEMALA: Two die, CAFTA ratified

GuatemalaÂ’s president ratified the US-Central America Free Trade Agreement on March 15, hours after police killed two activists in a violent attempt to break up a protest calling for a referendum on the trade agreement. By lowering US tariffs, CAFTA is likely to threaten the livelihoods of small farmers and increase unemployment and may exacerbate the countryÂ’s food shortages. In the week before the vote, Guatemala was racked by some of the biggest protests in the countryÂ’s history, occurring simultaneously in the countryÂ’s cities and rural areas.

The shootings happened in the north-eastern province of Huehuetenango, as police opened fire on the dispersing protest. Across the country, water cannon loaded with dye and tear gas were used against protesters. El Salvador and Honduras have also ratified the agreement, which leaves Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and the United States yet to do so.

The Schiavo case is apparently having a horrible effect on the rate of admissions to hospice programs. That is the real tragedy that has come from this situation. No one in the media dared to shine a light on the beauty that is hospice care. No on dared to speak of the fact that death is a part of life and that hospice can make that experience peaceful and as free from suffering as is humanly possible.

If the legacy of Terri Schiavo is that doctos will now be more resistant than they already are about hospice (being as 80%+ of them completely misunderstand the purpose or the requirements or the costs and 80%+ of them hate the idea of hospice as they see it as an admission of failure), hospice care will be set back 25 years -- which is how long that it has been available in the US.

In a nutshell, BushReich is a gang of bullies and as such they have to have their way with everything. They need to thrust their ideology into every area possible. Shaivo was just the latest case.

According to Imperial Doctrine, the goverment exists for the sake of the rich. Nationalized health care violates that doctrine and can't be allowed. To make a profit health care must be privatized.

That blows that theory. It's very overcast here today and I just assumed (yes I made an ass outta Uma) it was the weather that was making my Sirius signal flutter.. Usually when that happens if I check the antennae aiming the terristerial signal is zilch FWIW.
