We have some heartwarming news for you today that involves two of our very favorite things: Al Franken and puppies!

Everyone's favorite senator passed a bill through Congress that would allocate $5 million in funding to a pilot-program providing service dogs for war veterans with mental and physical disabilities. Under the Service Dogs For War Veterans Act, 200 new service dogs will be given to war veterans--who will then be enrolled in a multi-year study to determine both the benefits and costs of companion animals for the disabled.

As the story goes, Franken was inspired by a veteran he met in Washington, DC during President Obama's inauguration, who told him that he wouldn't have been able to attend the ceremony if not for his service dog.

And that's not all: we have video of Franken cuddling with a service dog while speaking passionately about his pet project.

What? No wingnuts dropping by to take a swipe at Al?
Maybe they noticed what the story was about, and thought better of it.
In which case, I'd wonder if it's their hate-filled ideological barrier that prevents them from giving credit where it's due...

What class! I knew he was a smart guy, but watching him in the Senate,
he doesn't seem like a freshman, but a well seasoned bulldog!

Go get 'em Al!

We are lucky puppies to have you there.

I just wish the republicans were as nice and thoughtful as this man.

What a wonderful bill. Thank you. We have lots of dogs that are filling up all of the rescues and humane society that can be trained to meet these needs.

I have a little dust in my eye.

I can't help it, I'm sentimental about the puppy dogs, and this is a terrific bill.

Franken's national fame as a peppery satirist is perhaps his greatest asset and largest vulnerability.

Wow, I get all ferkempft - the great comic genius - him, Al Franken;
The heroic on-air jump-starter for Air America-him, Al Franken;
Now, the great, great Senator....him, Al Franken.

Peace and safety to you, Senator...I cast my emotional vote for you... Al Franken.

The Senate needs more Senators like Al Franklin. He is there for his voters.

Yes, this Senator is over the top. Al Franken was surely one of the funniest and most original comedians of all time; he has been one of the most astute political observers of the last decade. And now I have ever hope that he will be a most successful and progressive Senator, one quite unlike any we have ever had.

As for Michelle Bachmann, she seems to have... very serious issues. She appears to be the Sarah Palin of Minnesota. I think the people of Minnesota can do much better.

By the way, the picture at the top of this blog... the man photographed seems quite unconcerned about the enormous predator engaged in consuming him. Most amazing! The heroic man reminds me of Saint Laurence.

Franken has not disappointed. I know Minnesota is a large State. It still beggars the imagination that that idealogue Michelle Bachmann and Al Franken could come from the same place. Al, you are terrific!
