Today on The Lionel Show - Wednesday September 3rd.
BY SEAN “DERMOTT” KENSING
I’m a reasonable guy. I swear
to God I am.
I don’t want Rush Limbaugh
dead, I don’t think his listeners are Satan’s minions, and I don’t hate
“conservatives” per se. Though I
identify as a liberal, I’m rarely aligned with the ultra-left perspective on issues
vis a vis politics and the media. I am not and have never been a member of the
tin-foil hat crowd, on either side of the aisle (although I am fond of standing
in front of the yogurt display at grocery stores and screaming “where’s the
Plain?!?” in an effort to re-ignite thoughtful debate on the official account
of 9/11).
What I’m saying is, I am
possessed of a nose that perceives the stink of BS no matter wherefrom it
issues. I certainly lean left politically and personally, but I’m no
goggle-eyed Nader devotee, and you won’t find me in
Now, given all of the above,
I hope you’ll trust that I’m not constantly searching for evidence of
right-wing conspiracies in the media.
This issue is almost
hilariously divisive. The Right swears that The Left controls the media, while The
Left swears that The Right gets a free pass in the mainstream media and is
covered much more favorably than The Left. There is a fundamental disconnect
between the two camps on this issue, to put it mildly. Conservatives view sites like Media Matters
or the Huffington Post as left-wing loonies stirring up hare-brained theories
out of political desperation, while the left views these same sites as a
much-needed salve for the wounds inflicted on
Against the advice of my
therapist, my assigned social worker, and (oddly) my urologist, I have been
listening to a lot of conservative talk radio lately. What can I say? I’m a
glutton for punishment. Now, pundits from Sean Hannity to Bob Grant to Glenn
Beck to Rush Limbaugh are crying foul over Sarah Palin’s treatment at the hands
of the Liberal Media. They all seem to think she has been lambasted, tarred and
feathered, put on the rack, made to run the gauntlet, tried and publicly
executed by a jury of peers sneering down their noses at her quaint values and
home-grown image.
Let me repeat: I’m a
reasonable guy. I’ve tried and I’ve tried…but I just don’t see it.
There is one exception: the
liberal blogosphere went off the electronic deep end yesterday with all the
inane and totally baseless rumors about Palin claiming her daughter’s child as
her own to protect her daughter’s image. But that’s not “the media’ the pundits
are largely talking about – if it was, they would have to admit that there are
just as many irresponsible, hateful bloggers on the right who pull things out
of you-know-where and post them only to incite vicious rumor-mongering and
pointless speculation. They’re upset at Palin’s treatment at the hands of the mainstream media, and as I said…I just
don’t see it.
If anything, I’ve seen
pundits and talking heads endlessly discussing how they can’t attack Palin for this teen pregnancy controversy, and how the
Democrats would be mighty unwise to do so. I watch a lot of TV for someone who
doesn’t own one, and I’ve not seen one person on CNN or MSNBC or ABC actually
suggest that Palin’s character can be questioned in the wake of revelations of
her daughter’s pregnancy. Not even close. All I’ve seen people saying is the
exact opposite – that the media absolutely cannot and should not do so.
If this is being tarred and
feathered, pass the bucket – it doesn’t look all that bad.
And now we learn that John
McCain has cancelled an interview with CNN because of the way Tucker Bounds
was (they claim) unfairly grilled regarding Palin’s experience. (Note that this “unfair” interview did not even TOUCH
on the issue of Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy). Watch the clip. What’s unfair?
She asks a bunch of questions, he proves himself to be constitutionally
incapable of actually answering them, and she ends the interview. You win some,
you lose some. The guy looks like a goddamn idiot.
I’m sorry, but that interview
offers no reason for the right to cry
“left-wing conspiracy”!
Can we all just be a little
more reasonable?

By NickyRoseSeptember 3, 2008 - 8:27amToo much fluff, not enough context.
Why don't you compare the loving, tolerant support that the right-wing evangelicals (Tony Perkins, James Dobson and the like) give to Bristol Palin and compare it to the cursing and denunciation of Jamie Lynn Spears?
That's where the whole disgrace of this affair comes in. These hypocrites are so anti-sex that the grotesqueness of their admiration of the governor's wayward daughter becomes glaringly apparent. When I was a teenager, if I knew that the Republican Party was the one that was pro-pre-marital sex, my political life would have been very different!
Whether a 17-year-old is a child is a mere technicality -- many 17-year-old criminals are tried as adults. Frankly, Sarah Palin should be ashamed of her daughter and ashamed of herself for not properly raising a child who becomes pregnant before marriage. Our high government officials are not mere bureaucrats, they often set examples for the citizens to follow. JFK single-handedly killed the men's hat industry because he never wore one back in the day when all men wore hats. If Palin doesn't get kicked off the ticket or, God forbid, becomes vice-president, the teen pregnancy rate will explode. Of course, Sarah Palin is going to need to keep some kind of government job, between her slutty daughter (who may be on her second kid) and her baby with Down's Syndrome, she's going to liberally use the gold-plated health benefits that government officials give themselves.
By the way, "bull" in Spanish is "toro" with one 'r'. Every gringo knows that ;)

By NickyRoseSeptember 3, 2008 - 8:39amPalin Pick
If, in his usual calm manner, Barack Obama and his campaign pick apart the Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, she will be history...
The fact is that, notwithstanding her family situation or, perhaps even TrooperGate, any reasonable centrist Independent or Democrat constituent would not, in good conscience, vote for a McCain/Palin ticket. McCain is making the same mistakes that Hillary Clinton (whom I admire very much by the way) made during the course of her campaign. They both underestimated the American public. Americans are more informed than ever. There is a critical mass of young, new voters merging with the more seasoned existing constituency that are just tired of what the Bush Administration has done to this country. They are excited by the rhetoric of Barack Obama, even after a grueling campaign against the most powerful and formidable political establishment family in the Democratic party, save the Kennedys. American exhaustion with Bush, the Republicans, and I would argue, McCain, goes beyond tangible debacles like Katrina, invasion of privacy considerations and FISA or even Osama Bin Laden and Iraq. These concerns, with little done right to counterbalance their negative effects, combined with an extended housing crisis, record deficits, the rise of China and gas prices have left most Americans (Democrat, Republican and Independent) with a sense of hopelessness. We feel dirty. Selecting a Vice-Presidential candidate that can, in the words of Fred Thompson, "field dress a moose" is going to do little to alay those feelings of sadness and despair.
America needs a bath. A good, cleansing bath. Sarah Palin is the flavor of the moment for the most die-hard in the Republican ranks. A closer look and the recognition that she cannot be sufficiently known in 60-odd days before the election will soon sink in to the rational American public. Barack Obama, Joe Biden and the Democratic party need to deliver that message...respectfully and deliberately. It needs to be transmitted again and again, ever more loudly as we approach the election until it rises to its crescendo and its inevitable strength - the truth SHALL set us free. She is not prepared, unvetted, and a hail Mary pass out of the Rovian Republican playbook. What else could she be? Largely unknown and untested, she is NO Hillary Clinton (did I mention that I admire Mrs. Clinton). Obama has done more during the administration of his campaign than Mrs. Palin has likely done during her time as mayor of Wasilla? or as Governor of the large, yet largely unpopulated state of Alaska. She is a wild card. From all accounts and external appearances she is an idealogue that will walk lock-step with John McCain on a march that will lead the spirit of Americans over the proverbial falls.
The McCain/Palin campaign is angry that the media and the liberal left seem to be attacking her. I think, for the most part, the country is asking questions because it DOES NOT KNOW this person who could be entrusted with running the country on two months notice - two months notice on the seeming whim of an elderly Senator. In the meantime, Mrs. Palin has hid (or been hidden by handlers) from the media ala Cheney. Whatever his status as a hero, John McCain represents the past and a United States that can no longer sustain its preeminence by standing still on old rhetoric, old policies or "moose-dressing". His judgment should be seriously called into question for making this pick in the first place and, equally as important, the manner in which it was handled. The right can get as emotional and fired up as it likes about Ms. Palin, who I believe is a good person. Being a good person does not qualify you to lead this country. Individual citizens need to be inspired to take an active role in the administration of this government because the hole that's been dug cannot be refilled by the next President or his adminstration alone. If, God forbid, Mr. McCain is forced by illness or worse to give up the presidency, Mrs. Palin should not be trusted in any way as a reasonable potential stand-by. The Obama/Biden team just needs to make that clear. Over and over again.

By JusRichSeptember 3, 2008 - 9:35amBesides Tucker Bounds...
Since McCain introduced Sarah Palin to the world as his running mate for the presidency, I have been avidly watching various mainstream news programs to listen to how McCain campaign aides (like Mr. Bounds), republican strategists (by the way, what does this position entail?), and republican congressmen and congresswomen defend Ms. Congeniality. Even when asked very basically and directly, they never answer the damm question! I particularly enjoyed watching James Carville and Stephanie Miller actually laugh on Larry King's show the other night. I've experienced mixed emotions while watching these Q/A sessions, with a constant confliction between frustration, happiness, and curiosity. Helluva time...I know. Nonetheless, I come to only one conclusion: "they" have been brainwashed by GOP officials to say only supportive and positive things of the former mayor, while completely disregarding the obvious and rational realities of her "lack of abilities and inexperience" to serve as the vice-president and potentially the president, because "they" KNOW THIS MOVE UNDOUBTEDLY MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE!!! Until next time...

By andjustice4allSeptember 3, 2008 - 9:17amMinority Population Tour!
Hey kids,
After the show is done, I'd suggest taking a drive down University Avenue (catch it up behind the capitol building). Take it from St. Paul all the way to Minneapolis. You would definitely see a different population color scheme than the one found in Bloomington.
Even though a lot of it makes me cringe, said the native Californian, I'm totally loving your honest and off-the-cuff commentary about our fair city. And yes, I totally know that Mutant Walmart you are talking about down in Bloomington...
Sharon in Minnesota
Race and Ethnicity, 1990-2000
According to the 2000 census, Saint Paul’s total population grew by a modest 5.5% from 272,235 to 287,151 people.
Between 1990 and 2000, the population statistics for Saint Paul showed decreases, increases, and status quo population data:
The Caucasian population decreased from 81% to 64%.
The Asian population, primary comprised of Hmong and Vietnamese, increased from 7% to 12%.
Saint Paul’s Hmong population is one of the largest contingents of urban Hmong in the United States.
The African-American population grew from 7% to 11%.
The Latino population, the fastest growing population in the United States, grew from 4% to 8% in Saint Paul.
The Native American population remained constant at 1%.
Multiracial population data, for the first time in United States history, was gathered through the census and 3% of Saint Paul’s population declared themselves as multiracial.

By finapanteraSeptember 3, 2008 - 9:58amLionel Really that was soooo uncalled for........
FYI Please see below the gov website about
THE VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL
www.nps.gov/vive
I too have family that have fought in many of the DECLARED WARS this country
has been part of as well as the (2) Police Actions well. That would be Korea and Vietnam. You were just plain rude.
All I was trying to say (amidst the electronic difficulties with the phone connection) was that John McCain does not fit the true definition of a WAR HERO......VETERAN, YES.........WAR HERO, NO..............calling him that does a total disservice to the men and women of the war we are currently involved in.
My still living family members DO NOT wear the service they did for this country on their sleeve. They do not use it to get respect or even bring it up unless asked.
Getting shot down or crashing 3 planes before that fateful crash when Sen. McCain was captured. Does not qualify him to be President.
The one thing that it does prove is that the CURRENT PRESIDENT does not even have the military service of Sen. McCain.
