Maybe I had too much sauterne yesterday. Maybe I OD'd on turkey tryptophan and was in fact asleep, or sleepwalking -- postprandial somnambulism, perhaps. But while all hell was breaking loose at the Taj and terrorists ran amuck in Mumbai, and every legitimate news source and network seized the obvious opportunity to provide some coverage and analysis -- hell, only the Weather Channel didn't cover some part of this horrid day -- MSNBC, I could have sworn, broadcasted a seemingly endless, all-day "Lockup: Raw" marathon.

Happy Black Friday ev’ry-buddeh. Have you put up your Christmas decorations yet? Are you planning a trip to a bastion of consumerism? A “big box” store? Whatever your plans, retailers are slashing prices across the board in hopes that this day will live up to its name and they can finally start using the black pen to fill in their books instead of that unseemly red one they’ve been using up until now. This neo-tradition has become a part of American culture, and the fluctuating economy makes this particular Black Friday an important one historically: will America’s retailers weather the storm, or will Americans’ newfound forced frugality have them seeing red? We’ll discuss this, along with other issues of historic Americana with author Kenneth C Davis, renowned writer of the “Don’t Know Much About…” series, whose newest book “Americas Hidden History” will remove the proverbial wool from your eyes regarding how the many became one, and how the west was won. Families are coming back together; and urban centers are experiencing a mass exodus as yuppies and the like follow that long and winding strand of cellulose back to their humble roots. Back to a place where everybody knows your name, and they still remember about that five bucks you owe them. A place where the gun and religion clinging is in full effect, and the starry-eyed youths dream of the bright lights, big cities, and wardrobe malfunctions in store for them at the end of the Celebrity Rainbow. Such a place (Auburn, New York to be exact…CNY PRIDE BABY!) brings us our first guest today, Tim Delaney, the author and sociologist whose newest book “Shameful Behaviors” examines the culture of shamelessness being propelled forward by Popular Culture and the internet. (and some – like me – would say by elected officials, CEO types, and the elusive “Punditocracy”) We’ll talk to Tim about how best to deal with this epidemic of idiocy in module two.

I'm not a hunter. Never have hunted or killed anything save a fish or two. I am a gun nut; make that pistol nut. I love the smell of gun powder and the grey talc-like sheen it leaves on my firing hand. But I have never shot a living thing and expect no prize or award for my humanity. I know that many hunt and that hunters provide a much-needed balancing when they thin herds whose fates would be sealed if not thinned. Just look at New Jersey. Go ahead, look. We'll wait.

Our third hour guest is Tim Reiterman, a journalist who was at the center of one of the most disturbing events of the 20th Century: The Jonestown Massacre.

Mr. Reiterman accompanied Congressman Leo Ryan on his November 1978 trip to Joenstown - a trip which Congressman Ryan did not survive. Mr. Reiterman was shot himself, but survived to chronicle the both the shooting and the subsequent self-massacre by the disturbed members of Jim Jones' People's Temple.

Tim Reiterman's new book Raven has been called the definitive account of the rise of Jim Jones and his horrific descent in to a maniacal despot who oversaw a shocking mass suicide.

I'll say it again: Tim Reiterman was there. Anyone else have chills?

Let me start by stating without hesitation that I am a fan of MSNBC's "Morning Joe" and its eponymous host, Joe Scarborough. He's a conservative with common sense and, while I certainly don't agree with everything he says (gee, that was profound), he makes a lot of sense.
