Where's Rachel?

David Bender said Rachel was on TV today, but he didn't say where. I'm guessing Countdown, but come on! Can't we get a little better communication about what's going on?

Where's Rachel?

Gosh, I am getting so fed up! To get the radio on and hear Bender is a terrible let down. Did he say if she was going to be on at all today? They know this ahead of time and could be respectful to their listeners if they let us know ahead of time. Come on, Rachel, without us, you wouldn't be on radio or tv, we aren't going to leave you when you are not on, we'll be back when you are on. Just let us know, please and not make us wait till the radio goes on.

She's on da tube...

Yes Jason, Rachel is doing Countdown, as we speak.

Stream's down

But if Rachel's not here, who cares?

she is subbing for KO

subbing for KO -

you may be.
But it would also be very cool to see you on the tv machine like this!
thanks for the clip.

Aw - Nuts!

I had just logged on to this site when COUNTDOWN came on - and heard Rachel intone "Which one of these stories will YOU be talking about tomorrow?" ::sigh:: Yep, it's David Bender - again....

If Rachel's going to keep selfishly getting more popular and successful, she REALLY needs to find a better guest host. I think I saw like one person who was happy to hear Bender was on - and it sounds like he doesn't like Rachel (or anybody ELSE on AAR) at all.

You know, my hunch is that

You know, my hunch is that the NETWORK has more to say about who subs for Rachel on a regular basis than Rachel herself. As a matter of fact, I would put money on it...

You're Probably Right, Polly

Still, you'd think AAR would realize this is the slot where they can build up a serious replacement for Rachel if/when she gets a MSNBC gig - not lose a lot of her audience w/someone a lot of us see as a Centrist appeaser like Bender.

Jason - that's a good point. OTOH, Rachel manages to do a good job on COUNTDOWN when she guest-hosts, and the same problems working w/somebody else's staff applies for her too - which makes me respect her more, and Bender less since it doesn't sound like he even tries....

Rachel isn't going anywhere (right Rach?)

For some reason, Air America has never really seemed to care what many of us think when it comes to whom they hire and fire. San Seder for one and who replaces him? Egads!

I used to listen to the network ALL day long but gradually I found that they were employing people with whom I did not agree nor particularly like. So very slowly I listened less and less until now Rachel's show is the ONLY show I listen to (except for the occasional special event or guest that shows up). I really don't think Rachel is going anywhere as I am sure she intends to keep her day gig while developing the TV thang.

I was under the impression

I was under the impression that a show like Countdown has more writers than just the host. Partly because there have been a couple of times when Rachel was guest hosting and groaned at something she was about to read. She doesn't do that on her own show, so I'm thinking those were jokes written by other people.

That's just a guess, though.

Part of Bender's problem

Part of Bender's problem would be a problem with most other subs sub. It's not his gig, there isn't as much of a support team as there is on a TV show like Countdown, and he has other stuff to do.

I suspect almost anyone they got to fill in would do a call-in show just because it takes less time to prepare one. Heck, Rachel herself did an hour of call-in show the other day when she had to fill a third hour.

Not that I like Bender any more than you guys. But I don't listen to any radio pundit other than Rachel, so I hardly count.

Even Rachel has caught the MSNBC mistake fever

During Countdown yesterday, Rachel said that ten senators might not show up at the Republican convention out of the 49 possible. This she said was ALMOST 20%. In fact it is OVER 20%. While this is a trivial mistake, it it not uncommon on MSNBC. Keith Olbermann on June 30th said that President Bush was in office 22% of his first term when 9/11 happened. He recently mentioned this again but now said it was 20%. I did the math after the 6/30 comment and phoned the station and told them it was a liitle over 16% and called them a few weeks later to reiterate this but they have never corrected their statements. Howard Fineman was on Hardball a few weeks ago and stated that John McCain was now using three teleprompters instead of two when he gives his speeches, a one-third increase. The increase is actually one-half and I called them in DC and told them of their mistake 20 minutes into the program and they still did not correct it. While these mistakes are not major, they do indicate a lack of caring for the facts and leave the viewer wondering what other "facts" are being stated that are not the whole truth.

You're quibbling

One definition of "almost," the one you chose to use, is "just short of."
Other definitions are "nearly, roughly."
Perhaps you are unaware of the other definitions of the adverb "almost." But I think you are quibbling because you can't find something valid to complain about.

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed." Dwight Eisenhower

To Be Fair, Rachel DOES Sometimes Slip On the Details

It's not usually an important detail when she does - except that it makes it harder to hit The Right-Wing Echo Chamber for their DELIBERATE fudging of facts, obfustications and outright lies when they can say "Neener, neener, you dumbass libburul - you got that one fact two years ago wrong! Neener, neener!" That's partly why Olbermann's careful to acknowledge his own on-air mistakes and apologize for them - it makes him harder to hit when he goes after lies/fudges/obfustications/etc. etc. etc. perpetrated by Bill-O or Comedian Rush Limbaugh...or Rupert "Arrr!" Murdoch!

OTOH, Rachel's not chasing O'Reilly down a dark alley w/a verbal baseball bat every night.... ;)

The lack of O'Reilly bating

The lack of O'Reilly bating is definitely nice. It's one of the things that keeps me from watching Coutndown regularly.

Jason, while Keith

Jason, while Keith definitely has a "thing" about O'Reilly, it is small in comparison to the rest of his show and what he delves into nightly. If you actually appreciated the content of what Keith addresses, it would seem that the small and annoying O'Reilly references wouldn't matter much, especially if it meant missing the entire show. Heck, I am sick and tired of Keith's and Bill's vendettas and find them distracting, but they are but a tiny part of the show.

I would venture a guess that you might not like what Keith has to say in the larger context and that is the reason you don't watch the show.

Facts, facts, facts...darn them all

I can't believe you are in an uproar about this teeny tiny blip. I don't look at it as a disregard for facts, but rather a quick, off the cuff math equation (which we all do in our dailies) that just happened to be slightly askew. As far as taking MSNBC or any other news outlet to task for sloppy fact checking, I'm with you; but I am more concerned about the networks not catching the things that REALLY matter. You know, the stuff that has to do with life, death and whether our nation will still be around next year...

Follow-up

I am not picking on Rachel. In fact, I believe she is one of the most intelligent people on the air. I also believe the FCC should revoke the license of FOX News and maybe the Comedy Channel could pick it up. I know the really important stuff is going unchecked but our standards have sunk so low when mistakes that are realized are not corrected. As far as the word "almost"; if someone named John weighed 201 pounds and a friend asked him how much he weighed, I could hear John say 1) about 200 pounds, 2) 201 pounds, 3) over 200 pounds.
What he would not say is ALMOST 200 pounds.
The networks don't go after the really important issues because of ratings. The average person in this country can only understand things when presented in a simple way. That is why the Republicans have come so far because they keep it simple. When you go below the surface to really explain what is going on, the people's eyes gloss over and you lose them. If you lose them, they will stop tuning in and the ratings will drop. The netwoks need to turn a profit and that is what drives them.

Sheez-pick your battles-there are much bigger fish to fry!

If you aren't picking on Rachel, then why pick this forum to address your concerns so thoroughly? This is after all the Rachel Maddow forum, and you used her recent comment as an example and went further in subsequent posts..sure sounds like you exploited her recent comments for your own agenda and concerns.

Yes, Rachel is one of the brightest (and I'd add cogent ,hard working and ethical) political analysts/journalists out there--so why all the fuss here and now?

Take your gripe elsewhere, where it really applies. Her point was simply that a large number wouldn't be present. Why pick at such minutiae?

Of course she makes a few minor goofs now--that's called being human! That's bound to happen with the amount of info she needs to stay on top of...

What you seemed to have left out here is that unlike many others, she is consistently humble and quick to own her minor mistakes as soon as she grows aware. Goodness--even when she mispronounces something, she acknowledges it--and she often graciously qualifies existing limits of her knowledge and expertise before she engages certain discussions. I admire her tremendously for doing so.

Personally, I think it would be kinda scary if she didn't have an 'oops' every so often!

Your larger points are certainly correct (about ratings and Republicans dumbing down of material) but they don't apply here nor to Rachel--as she clearly does neither of these!

You really need to pick your battles and re-direct your energy to those who don't bother to do their homework ever, to those who repeatedly, maliciously and intentionally twist and distort facts for selfish gains. There are plenty enough out there doing serious damage.
