It didn't take me long to see that you were the smartest one of the group. Big fan, and we've been predicting that you would have your own show sooner or later.
Suggestions:
How about "Smart Takes" with Rachel Maddow?
Hope you bring in guests that no one else does, and give us the real scoop on issues that most people don't know about. Hope you're allowed great leeway in your choice of topics.
About the make-up: This seems silly, but it matters on television. Looks like you've got a different make-up person everyday. I'd say soften the eye make-up, and wear some color on your lips!! No need to look pale and washed out!
Maddow Mashup! or After Dinner News Aperitif! Or Look Out for Tomorrow! or Nightly Roundup. or , uh, Soothing Evening News, or, Rachel's Rockin' Roundhouse! . \. I'll keep trying . . .
I think the name Rachel Maddows "Mad for You" News is good, in several ways:
It could mean you are angry, so we don't have to be, about all of the disgruntling news...
It could mean you "like us"...
It could just be a play on part of your name...
I strongly agree that the opening Iraq segment needs to be reworked into a suitable format for TV. But how to do that? Artist renditions of the fighting? Journalists are not permitted to publish photos of the war, right?
If the experts at MSNBC (including Rachel, of course) can bring the war segment through the transition to TV in a way that keeps viewers interested, it could have a big impact on the new viewers.
Please get the new tv show distributed as a podcast. I have a tv, but I don't have cable. I listen to Countdown via iTunes. Also listen to your radio show via iTunes. I can't bear to miss the new show. ;-)
MSNBC already podcasts Countdown without commercials directly from their website - I usually watch it live or on Tivo, but when I am on the road I can get the podcasts usually a few hours after the cable "broadcast."
Having countable downloads of a show is probably as valuable as less accurate Arbitron ratings - people who take the effort to download are much more likely to actually watch the show.
and you KNOW I will be watching the new "Rachel on the TeeVee Machine Program" every night!
Gives me an hour a day of unadulterated Keithiness - and I get Rachel's podcasts all the time, since the nearest AAR affiliate is an hour-and-a-half away in Ithica! :o
lets see . . . 'Newsworthy." or 'Fit to Print' or whatever the tv equivalent is.... 'Ready For Air' perhaps?. Bigtime! with Rachel Maddow. that hasn't been taken yet.
I'm so thrilled to hear about your new show. As others have mentioned, please have a podcast available. I listen to Keith Olbermann everyday this way as we do not have cable or a dish.
Quick suggestion. Would you consider having radio personality Erin Hart (www.erinhartshow.com) as a contributer now and then? She is brilliant and delightful.
As far as names. Hmmm....
~ Maddow's Muse You Can Use
~ Views and News with Rachel Maddow
How about Maddow and Combs? A fair and balanced discussion where a comb of some sort responds to Rachel's argument with a whimpering "Obama is a Muslim/Liberation Theology/Jeremiah Wright/Bill Ayers be scared" type comment and then Rachel dismantles the comb.
Secondly....So happy you are getting such a platform. No one deserves it more.
* I guess it goes without saying never to have Joe Scarborough on the show.
* I think the more you can approximate the "Campaign Asylum" podcasts, the better.
* Also, I know you probably don't have much control over this, but if you can get them to go easy on the make-up - you certainly don't need it, and it's so obviously not you!
ah, sweetie, I like to think i had some small part in this, bugging MSNfreakinBC with all those emails, even sent one to Abrams (oops) under mistaken impression he was still in charge....
anyway:
encourage: LIVE TV: Kent Jones!! Make 'em pay him a decent salary, he will spark the show on television, he will burst off the screen. Do naked guy news with pixels, do weird panda stories, *show* stuff. Use that ol' television machine, stuff like Oddball and World's Worst leaven Keith's show and pulled in my 10 yr old, who never watched news until Countdown; after six months he was making Scooter Libby jokes. Draw in that next wave of news consumers.
encourage: Nerd Culture. Not sure what this means right now but I think this is the first time that One Of Us has gotten a news show. Bring on odd, kooky people (loved the Sasquatch Patrol on CwKO). See if the FCC will let you mix drinks on Friday night's show.
encourage: Face to Face interviews. Agree with guy who said faces-in-boxes-shouting shows are overrepresented on the news networks (although I am reassured when I see you and Gene Robinson on that Gregory kid's show, believe me; but I guess you are leaving boxdom behind now...).
discourage: Too much makeup. I know, I know, just saying.
Again, congratulations, you have worked hard for this. Our love to Susan.
This is to suggest that aside from Keith Olbermann, the rest of MSNBC has become a bunch of rightwing tools... read Media Matters, they seem to have
another example everyday of rightwing bias on MSNBC...
fear not... they still aren't Fixed News yet though... CNN has the title of "Faux News Lite", but since MSNBC is still owned by GE, and a McCain presidency is in GE's best interest... well, you get the idea...
Congratulations!, It was bound to happen. How about "Rachel Maddow with The Final Word" or "What's Left with Rachel Maddow." I am anxiously awaiting the start of your show, even more anxiously than I'm awaiting the VP announcements!
Here's my suggestion for Ms. Maddow's new show on MSNBC. How does"Rachel Maddows Other Show" sound?
I must say that I was overjoyed to hear the news. I'm already a loyal viewer & it isn't even on yet.
Congrats & GO GET 'EM, GRRRL !!!!!!!!
Congrats on your new show. I really enjoy your insights on Race for the White House and Countdown. I watch Countdown everynight and plan to tune into your show at 9:00. I'm sooo happy that you will be taking the timeslot of Verdict w/Dan Abrams. I must agree with another comment - please no Joe Scarborough or Pat Buchanan, they make my teeth hurt. I would like to suggest Michelle Bernard as a guest host for you. You are both smart women and I enjoy hearing your perspectives. Maybe you can have Keith Olbermann as your first guest.
I can't watch Olbermann or Rachel's new show, because Comcast took MSNBC out of my expanded basic cable package a while back. Is this a local thing? I'm in Oregon.
I'm also wondering if Rachel's radio show is going to include one hour of the audio of the TV show, like the first hour is now. Is she leaving that TV show? I'd be interested in having the audio of the new show as part of the radio show, but I've lost interest in the TV show audio that is currently on in the first hour. I was interested at first to hear how a smart progressive would interact with TV bozos, but I found it unhelpful in my quest to deal with bozos (they are deaf to new ideas on TV as well), and all the time when Rachel is not talking is a waste of my time.
My suggestion for a title for the new show: "that other show on MSNBC that's not a total waste of time."
Either via iTunes if you have a video iPod or AppleTV (yeah, I'm that geeky) - or if you're not an iPod user, just download it from your browser here and watch it on your PC. :)
I think it's a Comcast thing. They removed MSNBC from my parents' cable package in CT also ... while keeping CNN and FOX News. In order for my dad to still indulge in watching his beloved Yankees *and* Rachel, he ponied up for the extra Comcast package.

Rach,
I forgot to mention that I constantly tell my wife (we're breeders)that you are my most favorite lesbian. She's not jealous. Congrats on the new gig. You will blaze incredible new trails. Ddoonn'tt ddrriinnkk tthheeiirr Kkooooll-Aaiidd. It'll make you see double.
Love ya, girl
Rachel, I worked a summer job that allowed me to listen to your show in its entirety every day on podcast. It was an enlightening blessing. You are amazing!!! Congrats on your new show, you are going to do fantastic things, can't wait!
As soon as I heard the news, I thought to myself, "Finally, more people will get to hear 'News From Iraq and Life During Wartime'". It is a must have. No one else can explain the situation like you can, and it gives you an oportunity to talk Iraqi soccer from time to time without having to come up with some awkward segue (cause we know you hate those).
Keep up the fight, you are loved by more people than Comedian Rush Limbaugh can imagine.
I can't think of the last time that two consecutive hours of worthwhile television on the same network. Perhaps I'm biased because I'm liberal and young, but I think the two most interesting people on cable news today are Olbermann and Maddow. Honestly, this is the best thing to happen to my TV watching habits in a long time.
Anyways, my suggestions are as follows:
-Maddow's Medicine
-Public Policy, Piffling Politics and Our Crazy World
-Reason with Rachel Maddow
-Rational Thought with Rachel Maddow
I don't really know. I'm sure others can come up with something better.
Congrats! Continue to cover news items that get overlooked in the mainstream -- such as the Iraq/China oil contract and how did Georgia manage to shoot down so many Russian aircraft anyway? (More than you would expect, anyway.)
I would like to politely request that you do EVERYTHING IN YOUR POWER to make msnbc do a full podcast of the TV show. Sometimes your podcasts are the only things that get me through a long graveyard shift and it would be so sad to miss your show because of not having... TV.
otherwise.. YAY! and I agree with other posts, you should keep the life during war time bit. Its important now more than ever with political coverage dominating the news cycle.
Most of the MSNBC shows already have a full & free podcast and I would imagine that Rachel's would be no exception. Although, I must admit (and don't tell the suits at MSNBC) KO's and Rachel's shows are the only two for which I would gladly pay. But I'd rather not. I like them being free.
It's true that MANY MSNBC shows are podcast, but not, for example, Dan Abrams' show. He whose former time slot Rachel will soon occupy. So it's still a good idea to bug MSNBC for podcasts.
I admire you more and more each day and as a 67 year-old lifelong extreme left-wing bleeding heart liberal Democrat, I couldn't be happier with the announcement of your new show on MSNBC. You and Keith will make a solid two hour block of fantastic reporting. I couldn't find a place to email you to offer a free suggestion for your new show, but I wish you had 'checkout' in the title as I can always go to you or Keith to check out the validity of a news item; Something as, "The Checkout", "The Checkout Line", "Check It Out"...as only examples. Congratulations! It's OURS and MSNBC's gain and I can't wait!
I have to admit . I expected this for you. In a years time, since I 've first heard your broadcast I knew you were going to soar to great heights. First with Oberman and now,on your own. I feel I now have a voice. Yours and mine are the same voice of reason. I am so happy for you. Muchos Grasias, Philip from New Mexico
As far as names for your new show goes, I have complied a couple of maybes:
1. TIME SPENT with Rachel Maddow
2. FULL COVER with Rachel
3. CHARGED! with Rachel
4. FOCUS with Rachel Maddow
5. EQUILIBRIUM with the Doctor
6. PUNCTUATED EQUILIBRIUM with Maddow
7. EFFECT or CONSEQUENCES with Dr Maddow
8. HAND OVER FIST with Maddow
I watched Keith and you live with this announcement and you guys just walked up to my suggestion for this new show's name and it didn't seem to dawn on you as a possibility.
"Next with Rachel Maddow" or even "Next with Dr. Rachel Maddow" seems to me a perfect fit, as well as an internal pun if you use the "Dr." in the title.
Why does this seem to me to fit so well?
1) You have been the perfect substitute host for Keith right along, this is the "Next" step.
2) You are following Keith directly; in which case "Next" is self-explanatory.
3) You really ARE a Doctor (Ph.D.), and you have a razor sharp sense-of-humor, the "Doctor's Office" internal pun will play into that very neatly; this should give all of the "Mad-Men" working around MSNBC plenty with which to promote you.
4) The idea of "Next" is based on the principle of what is new, or coming on following the status quo; NOW THAT'S MY RACHEL!!!!
Given time, I could certainly put more reasons down for this as a show title, but I also know you will almost certainly not see this posting. You have way too much to be doing rather than field suggestions from "the peanut gallery", but I think this is a solid idea, and has the grace of being SIMPLE [see: "The KISS Principle"]. It is easy to remember, and ties in very neatly with who and what you are.
Thank you (or your staff) for the consideration of reading this. It was the best I could think conceive. Best of luck, but luck will not have anything to do with your expanding success, Rachel. Just walk in there and give 'em what for!
According to Olbermann's "Worst Persons in the World" segment tonight, The Comedian went on some tear that managed to slam Rachel's politics, her appearance and her sexual preferences in short order.
Boy, Rush - your ass must be really burnin' right about now.... >:)
Fans are really coming up with some great ideas here. I don't envy having to decide on this one, Dr. Maddow...
And now, a few more thoughts...
Rachel Maddow with Just the Facts
Facts not Fiction with (from) RM
Get(ting) the Facts First with/from Rachel Maddow This is from a quote of Mark Twain's: "Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please." (minus the distortion, of course)
Dr. Rachel Maddow Speaking Truth to Power (and the power is you, the viewers)
True News with RM
News not Agenda with RM
And, the obvious title from this quote may be too long, but I love the quote: "Get the facts, or the facts will get you. And when you get them, get them right, or they will get you wrong." - Dr. Thomas Fuller
And, as a fellow member of the proud G&L family clan, oh, I can't help myself...
As far as the general format goes, I'm thinking of a more youthful, hipper, and, of course, condensed version (hey, only 40-45min per taping, right?) of the Washington Journal with a different, but fixed theme for each day of the week. Like...
Monday: Our military and foreign relations affairs. A listing of and a moment of silence for recently fallen soldiers, veterans care, gross incompetence or criminal conduct by government contracted agencies who may be responsible for infrastructure (re)building in war-torn countries we may be occupying, diplomatic disputes, etc.
Tues: Keeping tabs on Washington, state and locally elected officials. If there is proof of a pol running afoul in some way (i.e., having a habit of attaching totally unrelated provisions to pieces of legislation for the sake of partisan politics; unethical lobbyist connections; making offensive comments, etc.), post their contact email address and/or office phone number and encourage/suggest the viewer to take action by giving these politicians a piece of their mind.
Wed: Green Wednesday. Example topics and interview subjects: former oil-turned-wind tycoon, T. Boone Pickens. Vermont Independent senator, Bernie Sanders, regarding the Solar Roofing Act legislation he introduced on 07/08/08. State and federal tax credit/rebate programs for the purchase and installation of solar roof panels. Interviews with elected officials on what it would take to get American automobile makers to raise fuel economy standards. Interview the CEOs of American startup automakers (i.e., Tesla, Aptera Motors, etc) that are in the business of producing low/zero-emission hybrid vehicles, etc.
Thurs: All things literary. I'm thinking BookTV with the occasional discussions of graphic novels with the writer(s) and illustrators(s) since you're such a comic book geek :D
Fri: Free for all Friday. Maybe throw in an Ask Doctor Maddow segment somewhere in the mix? :p
Possibly excluding Friday, in the first half hour, discuss a few recent news items relevant to the daily theme in-depth; interview guest subject(s) and maybe discuss some current events with them. Second hour, take live phone calls (not sure whether or not it's a good idea to have separate phone lines for political party affiliations, like the Washington Journal), and/or emails where the viewer can pose a question not just for you, but to the guest(s) as well.
I've been listening to you on the radio for a few years and I was glad to see you participate in the political discussions on MSNBC with Keith Olberman, Chris Matthews, Chuck Todd, Joe Scarborogh, Pat Buchanan, and others. You fit right in and you represented Air America well! Congratulations on getting your own television program, too, now! I am happy for you and many of my progressive friends are looking forward to your show. Can you integrate some of your Air America friends into the show too? Maybe Randi Rhodes (a respected matriarch) can be a regular guest once a week or so, or Stephanie Miller and/or her Mooks can make special appearances on occasions. Stephanie's morning show's producer, Chris, is assigned to monitor the right wing talking points on FOX so we (her audience) don't have to. Sometimes it appears as if he has fallen for some of their logic and Stephanie and Jim have to watch him closely. Maybe sometime Chris and Joe Scarborogh can debate to separate right wing facts from right wing propaganda, lol. I would like Jim to remain unseen. He should always be interviewed on a telephone to keep up a mystyc. And finally, what about Kent Jones?! I think Jim Ward and Kent Jones have some of the most brilliant comedic minds and they could probably work well together.
Honestly, Rachel, you are the one that matters. You will be a pleasure to watch nightly and the country will learn a lot on your TV show and thats important
Congrats Rachel, I was dancing around the kitchen in joy when I heard!
You have a zillion comments, so I'll be brief:
Name of show, suggested by my husband: Maddow About You
Contents:Debunking the horrible Emails of the Week/Day/Month etc.
a la Snopes. (Invite Barbara from Snopes? She's wonderful. She has personally answered every email I've ever sent her.)
Your research staff can debunk the myth and rants that the right wing has been sending along and tell truth to power. Whether it starts with Rush or Rove or even Cheney, these emails get a power and 'truth' of their own and we need more facts to dispel them.
Rachel! Would you like me to call Liz Winstead and Kent Jones as cohost or are you going to take care of that yourself? Don't forget Chuck D.
You are the greatest Dr.Rachel.
Ealey
I only listen to the podcast of your show, so I'm a few days behind in hearing the news.
The most important suggestion I have is to download some of the podcasts for Keith Olberman's, George Stephanopolos's, and some of the other shows on TV.
Then listen to them.
What you'll find is that with only the barest exception, there are very few times that the lack of video means anything.
All the talk "television" shows are really radio with make up.
Look at what video you can bring to your program.
If it is Ask Dr. Maddow, find questions that rely on more visual answers. For instance, don't just show you answering the question, go out on the street to answer it. For instance, if I asked how does coal turn into diamonds, it would be cool if you went to an industrial diamond plant to show how the pressure of a machine can make a diamond.
If it is a segment on alternative energy, why not stand next to a wind turbine to show just how noisy (or not) it is.
And go hire a really good animation graphics person to do cool charts and maps and things like that to explain things like rising energy costs, invasions of Georgia, etc.
Make it VISUAL. (Take a look at Keith's graphics, paper throwing, etc for more ideas.)
Complete with Iggy & the Stooges song as theme. Radio shows use some of the rowdy tunes out there.....why not TV?
Couldn't be more happy about your meteoric rise. Since I'm hanging on to Keith, Bill Maher for dear life, I will hold onto you as well.
You mentioned with Keith an interest in having Bands. Instead of typical television bafoonery, I would put my vote in for a musician or band stating a political belief, or playing a tune, something different each night.
The best thing one can do on television that one cannot do on radio is bring us IMAGES. Until Americans start seeing IMAGES from Iraq, we sadly are just not going to care. Think about the evocative images we can all call up from VietNam. If in addition to NEWS from Iraq each day, we had IMAGES from Iraq each day, we might care a lot more.
A freind received this link from an Iranian-American friend of his. He writes,
this... "pretty much covers most of the aspects of the Iraq conflict through pictures of
children. There are a lot of them and toward the end they get progressively grimmer, so you may want to stop once you get to the pictures of hospitalized children. After that comes the dead children. "
My husband Chad and I couldn't be happier for you! We've been big fans for a long time, and have been anxiously awaiting this...although we'll have to watch on YouTube, as we are those liberal dorks with no television.
Please keep the news from Iraq and Life During Wartime segment front and center on your show. I find it horrifying how cavalier we are about these wars that we're in, and the media's complicity in letting us pretend that we're NOT in them. Isn't anyone else outraged, for example, by Tropic Thunder? Would a movie where we mock the phenomena of wartime torture and deadly battle have really been embraced by the public during WWII? Is our nation so soulless that not only do we not honor our vets when they return from service by providing them with meaningful physical and mental health care and by training them to find gainful employ, but that we can actually go to the theater and mock and trivialize the reality of their sacrifice while they are still sacrificing?
We need strong voices like yours (and mine, and all of ours) to keep these issues as front and center as possible until the roar of our voices is finally so loud that not even the Bush/McCain cone of silence can prevent them from hearing us and bowing to the sensible will of the people. We love and respect you immensely, and will help in any way that we can! We're all behind you, and fighting side-by-side with you on the local front! Gambate, as they say in Japanese! Hope to see you here in St. Paul in a few weeks!

Name: Pinpoint, with Rachel Maddow
Also:
* I guess it goes without saying never to have Joe Scarborough on the show.
* I think the more you can approximate the "Campaign Asylum" podcasts, the better.
* Also, I know you probably don't have much control over this, but if you can get them to go easy on the make-up - you certainly don't need it, and it's so obviously not you!
Other than that, please be yourself!
Congrats!

Congratulations to all of us! Another hour of Rachel and on the TV machine, yet, too. Can't wait.
I agree with others - News from Iraq (or where ever) - Life During Wartime is essential.
Please, please, keep the interviews with knowledgeable guests! Outside of your wonderful wit & LDW, that's the most valuable for me.
Name - Truth Out
Oh, wait...
Nothing's wrong with TRMS as far as I'm concerned. Just no stupid name like Hardball or Countdown or Race for the White House.

ah, sweetie, I like to think i had some small part in this, bugging MSNfreakinBC with all those emails, even sent one to Abrams (oops) under mistaken impression he was still in charge....
anyway:
encourage: LIVE TV: Kent Jones!!

Dear Rachel:
Congrats on your new show. I really enjoy your insights on Race for the White House and Countdown. I watch Countdown everynight and plan to tune into your show at 9:00. I'm sooo happy that you will be taking the timeslot of Verdict w/Dan Abrams. I must agree with another comment - please no Joe Scarborough or Pat Buchanan, they make my teeth hurt. I would like to suggest Michelle Bernard as a guest host for you. You are both smart women and I enjoy hearing your perspectives. Maybe you can have Keith Olbermann as your first guest.
I'm looking forward to your show.

By dwest08August 20, 2008 - 7:56pmComcast took away MSNBC

As soon as I heard the news, I thought to myself, "Finally, more people will get to hear 'News From Iraq and Life During Wartime'". It is a must have. I can't think of the last time that two consecutive hours of worthwhile television on the same network. Perhaps I'm biased because I'm liberal and young, but I think the two most interesting people on cable news today are Olbermann and Maddow. By Polly Tics (not verified)August 23, 2008 - 8:34amName for new MSNBC show Rachel: "Next with Rachel Maddow"
Stephen Burnett
YOU GO, GIRL!!!

Getting it Straight with Rachel Maddow
Straight From the Hip with RM, or maybe even
Whatever Happened to Straight News? with RM

By weberdleeAugust 21, 2008 - 1:58amthrowing some more ideas out there
Ya know...if nothing is set in stone quite yet.

By Lv99 SlackerAugust 21, 2008 - 2:13amKeep Up the Good Work!!!

By FastMovingCloudAugust 21, 2008 - 10:48amSuggestions for new show
Rachel,
I only listen to the podcast of your show, so I'm a few days behind in hearing the news.

By lunakatAugust 21, 2008 - 1:07pmLet's Get VISIBLE
Dear Rachel,
The best thing one can do on television that one cannot do on radio is bring us IMAGES.

hey, Rachel,
My husband Chad and I couldn't be happier for you!
