Tonight's TRMS
All the enthusiasm for Rachel's big annoucnement yesterday overwhelmed our poor little website so I was unable to update the blog posting. Turns out we had to move Lou Dubose, the Texas journalist with the hunkiest voice we've ever heard, to today. Lou and Rachel will be talking about the lingering Abramoff effect on McCain's presidential campaign. Then, Rachel welcomes John Podesta from the Center for American Progress. His latest book is called “THE POWER OF
PROGRESS: How America’s
Progressives Can (Once Again) Save Our Economy, Our Climate, and Our Country”
Also on today's show? Radio Theater and the introduction of the phrase "leadership malpractice!"

Show name = The Truth Meme
Rachel, you're so good at debunking the Republican mythos that I think you should call your show the Truth Meme - spreading the truth virally, overriding the "conventional wisdom" that misleads the uninformed and obscures the truth, even to the informed.

By Polly Tics (not verified)August 23, 2008 - 10:59amSorry about talking about yesterday's topic today...
...but I don't know if a new comment on yesterday's entry will ever get seen, and I really wanted to get this off my chest.
First of all, *big cheer* on the TV show, I almost let out a yell at work when I saw the news!
Since you asked for input on the new show, here's my 2 (actually, it probably adds up to about 30 or 40) cents:
One thing that I have noticed, and liked, about Rachel's radio show, as well as the times that she's guest-hosted Countdown, is that she doesn't start yelling and screaming when she's really angry about something. She gets dangerously quiet -- sometimes viciously snarky, sometimes just straightforward and outraged. But no shouting. I *like* that more than I can say. Even though I'm a pretty big Olbermann fan, sometimes he needs to turn the volume down a notch or three.
Second: carryovers from the Rachel Maddow Show on radio: chalk up another vote for Kent Jones!!! Actually, I can't think of much that should be left behind: Ask Dr. Maddow and Burying the Lede would be good (if she can bring back Kent, maybe she could bring back the Pet Story too?) And since it is true that the traditional media won't cover it, News From Iraq and Life During Wartime would actually be a big thing to start having on a daily basis on MSNBC.
Now for my "big idea." I don't know if it's so silly that it would just get laughed off at MSNBC, but... She needs a new format for the TV show, something unique to Rachel Maddow. Instead of a "Countdown", how about a mixed drink? You take a couple shots of the hard news, some mixer (the fact-checking that the MSM just doesn't bother with, and sometimes the truth can be a little bitter, like lots of mixers), an occasional sweetener (the good news that no one else does, like the Iraqi National Soccer Team and such), celeb/tabloid news could be Pineapple Juice (my sister who's a bartender once told me that a lot of the sickeningly sweet mixed drinks have pineapple juice in them), and then a paper umbrella or other silly garnish for the top (Weird News from Far Away, etc.)

The radio theatre was pretty funny today. How could it be done on TV?
Puppet show.
Get a little stage and some cheap puppets. The cheaper the better, just sew little wigs and googly eyes on socks. Maybe make the back of the little stage a green screen so you can put up different backgrounds easily.

I would like to organize a Rachel Watching Party on the Monday of her show debut.

Anyone have access to the TV remote in a bar where you can hear in downtown Seattle/Capitol Hill? It's McCraining again, and I can't think of many things more fun than getting together to watch the first night of Rachel's new show.
I'll talk to the ladies at Seattle's sole lesbian bar, the Wild Rose. Bet they'd be up for a Maddow party. (Incidentally, the Wild Rose is in a building that has a tattoo parlor called "Super Genius" that misspelled the word "tattoos" on its sign.)

I hope we can go to a bar or something like that. I'm guessing that since it would be a Monday night, they are going to have a slow night, and would be willing to tune on to MSNBC. This is why I would like those interested in attending a soiree in the SF area to tell me where they are (I know which town you're in) so that I can scout a place that is not too far for all involved. ;)

Question: What happened to Cindy McCain's arm--the latest pictures of the last 3-4 days have shown her in a cast/sling. Could this coincidenally have occurred with the blow-up of her family ? Did someone see her fall? What is the deal? (Is hotheaded McCain loose?)

By ObamaProAugust 20, 2008 - 6:23pmDoes the Iraq treaty pull the rug out from under Obama?
It looks like the US deal with Iraq is getting closer to happening.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26313050/
This includes a timeline for us getting completely out of Iraq by the start of 2011. So the big thing that Obama is calling for might happen without him.
Now we've got the news Rachel mentioned about more troops being sent to Afghanistan, something else that Obama has been asking for.
Does anyone else think this might weaken Obama? They could play this as the Bush administration looking over the smart kid's shoulder and cheating off his test. But I think the main thing that will come of this is that these issues will become moot points.
Obama was pushing to get out of Iraq. That resonated with a lot of people. If it looks like we're going to pull out of Iraq whether Obama or McCain is President, then that really isn't a voting issue anymore.

By drdarkenyAugust 21, 2008 - 12:54amStalling, jive talk & manufactured rhetoric...
The US has no other choice BUT TO withdraw. Iraq's leadership (and general population) have said that they insist that the US leave Iraq sooner rather than later, thus eradicating any conflicting opinions. We need to leave, we have been told to leave and thus we will HAVE to leave; but to do so will embarrass our war hungry leadership, so they have used all kinds of manufactured rhetoric to explain away our exit.
This entire affair is good in that we finally are getting what we want (our troops home, our money ceasing to be be spent in such a reckless and grandiose manner and to let the Iraqis govern their own country) while the US of A pretends to be doing it on their own volition. Frankly, I don't care who says what at this point, I just want our men and women safe and sound and if that means that temporarily we have to pretend we won some sort of conflict, than so be it.
- Email this page
By Polly Tics (not verified)August 23, 2008 - 10:54amBush (& his minions) R doing just what Obama has been suggesting
Jason, I've got to disagree with your basic premise here. How on earth could/would the new treaty hurt Obama in any way? It was Obama's position all along that we should have a timetable/time line/horizon date to find a way to withdraw our troops from that country in a safe and well thought out manner. His concept was to work with the current military leadership to plan for a safe and gradual withdrawal (within a time line) that would benefit both Iraq as well as the US of A, thus the current administration has finally agreed to that very concept (albeit they have different rhetoric on the matter).
Weaken Obama? Not a chance, but it just may push McCain into a box where he needs to defend his many warlike positions within Iraq and the numerous other countries with which he seems to want to fight.
I also find it a bit odd that you continually seem to hint or suggest that Obama (or the Democratic Party) is weakening with each and every day that passes. Perhaps I am wrong here, but it seems that you are always hypercritical of the man, his staff, the policies he proposes and continually seem to have an intellectual predilection for negative viewpoints. When reading you, it appears that anything left of center usually seems to show weakness or has an error in fundamental judgment and it is that very base to which I react.

"I also find it a bit odd that you continually seem to hint or suggest that Obama (or the Democratic Party) is weakening with each and every day that passes."
I don't know what gave you that impression. I'm nowhere near as doom and gloom about the Democratic chances as Rachel is. I certainly am critical of Obama, but I'm also critical of McCain. Neither man gets a pass on anything.
I'm not suggesting that this is a *strong* possibility, just a possibility. I think my logic is reasonable. Look at what happened with the G.I. Bill, McCain fought against it, then President Bush *thanked* McCain for his hard work on the bill. Some parts of the media called Bush on that, but not as much as should have. Sometimes it's not about proper credit, it's about spin. That's how Bush got into the White House to begin with. Since Obama can't really say that he talked the Iraqis into his point of view, he can't directly take credit for the withdrawal timeline. Yeah, nobody would believe Bush if he tried to take credit, but only Obama's base would think Obama did it, and they're already voting for him so that doesn't help.
The possibility that I'm seeing is that if the withdrawal issue is settled, then people might stop talking about it. The media doesn't spend time on moot points. If people aren't talking about it, then it won't be something that Obama is using to plead his case.
Whether or not Obama would deserve credit is not the same thing as whether or not he'd get it. If we're getting a timeline no matter which candidate people vote for, then having a timeline isn't a voting issue anymore. So yeah, I see a possibility that this could weaken his position. Not a certainty, but a possibility that should be prepared for.

By Jason M. BryantAugust 24, 2008 - 12:16pmAnother thing, Polly
By the way, this type of thinking can go the other way, too.
Look at oil. McCain has been doing very well with, "Drill here, drill now!" even though it is a load of BS. However, oil prices have been going down lately. They might go up again, but what if they continue going down, maybe even significantly down? Then the gas prices will slowly go down too, making the public less concerned and the media play a lot fewer "Consumers hurting at the pumps" segments.
McCain's people have already tried to say that his and Bush's calls for drilling are what caused the prices to go down, but nobody's paying much attention to that. So now oil has the same possibility for McCain that Iraq withdrawal has for Obama: loss of public worry creating loss of a srong talking point.
Again, I don't think it's particularly likely. I only raise this kind of stuff to discuss the possibility.

I'm listening to the announcement on podcast and I'm thrilled! Good job!
my 2 big suggestions for the teevee machine, one purely political, and one personal/political:
1) please keep "News from Iraq and Life During Wartime" at the top of the hour. Regardless of the specific news on any given day, doing this sends a VITAL message: we are a country at war, and this must not be ignored.
2) please do what you can to keep them from dressing you up in drag!!! And by this I mean, overly femmy makeup and clothes. As a femme bi woman myself, I must agree with you that the hetero-normative look is NOT you. I know they won't let you on in your full soft-butch glory, but really, can't there be some reasonable line you won't cross? Lipstick with color in it? Eyeshadow? Fluffy hair?

Anyways, best of luck, and all us back here in the valley will be so happy to see you on TV--or just to know that you're there.

By wildwolfgurlAugust 20, 2008 - 7:44pmChanging appearance
Rachel mentioned that MSNBC did not ask anything of her other than that she be herself, which was a major factor in her decision to go to work for them. I'm assuming that means appearance, also. They've not done anything to her appearance in her many guesting spots, including guest-hosting Countdown and Race for the White House, other than a bit of makeup. I don't think they'd go all out to try to fluff her up. If she needs some special appeal for straight men, I think her natural attractiveness is plenty. I'm with you, though, and I hope the network agrees.

I am so glad to hear that. I don't have cable myself (or even an antenna) and so very rarely see television at all. I was concerned because of how TV generally wants women to look, and because I did stumble upon this:

which annoyed me a bit. Not that I think Dr. Maddow isn't "hot" or whatever (like that matters at all), but the obvious meaning on that site was "Rachel is looking more straight." Ugh.
'Nuff said about the appearance topic. Sounds like the TV powers that be will let her be herself, so good. On to more important matters!

Speaking for myself, I am damn glad Rachel is on the radio as well as the tube! "Radio Theater" as you call it, is needed FOR the very care and feeding of our communities, so why eliminate such a vital element?
For goodness sakes, why limit yourself when you can spread information, excitement and the genuine love of all things politic to merely cable? Heck, a large majority of our population doesn't even have the benefits of cable TV, but at least most have access to the radio. Why in the world would you ever want to limit such a talent and hoard her away from the majority of our glorious population?

I barely have words to express how happy I was to hear about the latest programming development at MSNBC. I realize you probably don't want to be anyone's hero, but you're a real inspiration to this aspiring journalist. I cannot wait for 9/8/08! And let it be known: you're changing people's minds - some Republicans in my family (big fans of Keith's from his ESPN days...I don't think they quite knew where he stood politically...) started watching Countdown a few months back, and you've really grown on them since you started filling in for Keith. Keep up the fantastic work!
As for the name of the show...hmm...just call it "Your Liberal Media with Rachel Maddow" and then sit back and watch the fireworks when Bill O'Reilly's head explodes.
Speaking of Mr. O'Reilly, one suggestion for the show: please avoid anything akin to Keith's theatrical sparring with his Fox News rivals. While I believe it's important to keep tabs on the right-wing members of the traditional media, Keith's treatment of them borders on pompous sometimes. Don't drag yourself down to the level of Fox News by taking their bait. Elevate the discourse, and people will learn for themselves why the Fox News brand is so poisonous.

Provide daily information, until election day, about the latest on corrupt elections ...lots going on right now...Mark Crispin Miller and Robert Kennedy, Jr and Free Press are on top of the latest...the news about the Republican "unempeachable whistleblower", Steve Spoonamore, IT Security Expert, formerly of McCain campaign, who quit because of vote fixing, has revealed the criminal activities of Rove and the Republicans and gang stealing national and state elections since 2000. He has fingered Rove's IT specialist, Mike Connell, who asked Spoonamore how to destroy White House emails. Press and FEC reports show that Rove and Connell are now working for the McCain presidential campaign poised to steal another election. Connell, a staunch Catholic, says he is stealing elections to "save the babies". A law suit has been filed to depose all of the main characters.

Thom Hartmann...he's on Fox TV once in awhile, but people who watch TV need to know how much he has to offer. He knows so much about so much.
Put a human face on the stories instead of the usual speculators inside the beltway who are out of touch, e.g., the excesses and tragedies of ICE and how people are so mistreated...such as the outrageous handling of the people in Postal, Iowa. Without naming it so, you could do occasional stories and be the polar opposite of Lou Dobbs and his ilk. Talk to demonstrators without marginalizing them as MSM does.
Give a daily or weekly summary of important hearings on C-Span, the real truth instead of the misinformation that, if they discuss it, is mentioned and digested by media that doesn't understand the issues. By cool_princessieAugust 21, 2008 - 12:50pmOn the subject of Strelka, and Pushinka's puppies.
A friend of mine's cousin had one of the puppies, Streaker. From his blog:
"Strelka (Стрелка, "Arrow") spent a day in space aboard Korabl-Sputnik-2 (Sputnik 5) on August 19, 1960 before safely returning to Earth. Strelka went on to have six puppies with a male dog named Pushok who participated in many ground based space experiments, but never made it into space.[6] One of the pups was named Pushinka (Пушинка, "Fluffy") and was presented to President John F. Kennedy's daughter Caroline by Nikita Khrushchev in 1961. A Cold War romance bloomed between Pushinka and a Kennedy dog named Charlie resulting in the birth of 4 pups that JFK referred to jokingly as pupniks.[7][8] Two of their pups, Butterfly and Streaker were given away to children in the Midwest. -- from Soviet Space Dogs at Wikipedia.
"My cousin Mark, while he was a kid in Columbia, Missouri, got the puppy named Streaker. For years, there would be updates about Streaker in the family's Christmas newsletters. Streaker also had pups, or fathered pups (dont' remember Streaker's gender), and then we heard about the space dog grandpups."
