Today's TRMS

By Vanessa Silverton-Peel

We are live from the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado with our special Rachel Maddow Show unconventional convention coverage!  MSNBC has pre-empted Race for the White House tonight so Rachel will be live for two hours before Air America's special coverage with David Bender.  Side note: Rachel has started writing her Christmas wish-list early and THIS is at the very top.

On tonight's show we have lots of great guests.  The theme at the convention today is national security and vets issues so we'll be talking to our pal Paul Rieckhoff from Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and Steve Clemons from the Washington Note.  And then Rachel welcomes DCCC chairman Chris Van Hollen back to the show to talk about how he is using the convention to get more Democrats elected to the House.

okay, maybe not.

McCains' Experience

Hiya Rachel,

I realize that is might be a little off topic, but I have to ask you this question?

Senator McCain often states that he has more experience to lead our country and Senator Obama claims judgement is critical.

McCain has 26 years of representative experience as a member of both the House and Senate. Tah Dah !!! Now for the big question for the good Doctor... Is that 26 years of experience or is that 1 year, 26 times?

Judgement on the other hand is how to build upon that experience that one has accrued, Something Senator Obama has demonstrated, Unfortunately, Senator McCain has not, he is still adrift back in time, 40 some odd years ago.

Thank You and best with your new show. Speaking of which, unless that ancient Irish, gasbag of a commentator, that also has a sister which often commentates is under contract to appear on every MSNBC TV show, if possible, give him the pointy tip of your shoe.

Georgia vs Convention

Most US media handle Georgia in a complete wrong way. A way which in Western Europe doesn't have
support. In this case Obama or McCain the difference is not very big. Richard Hollbrokek - a cold war warrior
of magnitude proportion belive that he's failed Kosovo strategie may work in Georgia.

It doesn't and it won't. Georgia is not important enough for Western Europe. It's since early 18th Century
Russian. The best for them would be a State with a declared neutrality like Finland or Switzerland.
NATO membership is a no GO.

Please ask John McCain and Obama where Western Europe should get the Oil and Gaz delievery.
They should really re-think their position.

Does anyone have

Does anyone have the quote last night of what Rachel said about McCain using his POW experience as a political thing being what would tarnish it? (something like that) I was trying to tell a friend of mine today, and I'm just not putting the words together as well as she did.

Thanks!

HEY KATHRYNROSE

DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE BASHING OF WAR HERO AND NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE U.S.A. SEN. JOHN MCCAIN,,,DO THE PATRIOTIC AMERICAN THING AND SAY THANK YOU SEN. JOHN MCCAIN FOR DEFENDING OUR COUNTRY,, ALSO WE DON'T NEED YOUR VOTE BUT YOU REALLY SHOULD VOTE FOR A QUALIFIED CANDIDATE THOUGH... LET IT RAIN MCCAIN !!! CLINTON 2012 !!!!

That's NOT Pelosi

It's the secretary of the party, don't know her name, but it is NOT Pelosi. I have the radio on in the office..... as I put up a bookshelf.... and the TV in thel iving room... as the wifey relaxes on her sick day.....

So I can assure you it ain't no Pelosi.

HEY GRUMPY PUNK NORWEIGAN

Wot a Giveaway!

Should anyone be surprised this asshat Nazi Troll is homophobic, on top of everything else...?

I have no idea, BTW, why I’m typing in this weird case....

This is so much fun

Listening to the voting live with Rachel. It's like going to the show with a good friend. And it's so cool we got to hear the Hillary motion live with Rachel!

Woot!

Our 3am Commercial

The phone rings.....an old looking hand picks it up.....

A voice says "Sir, President Amahdinejad is smiling suspiciously"......and then you hear McBush singing, "Bomb, bomb, bomb....."

A historian for this historic moment

Rachel,

As the tv cameras panned the floor of the DNC, I'm quite sure I just saw historian (and Columbia professor) Simon Schama.

Go find him and interview him.

If it doesn't fit in with your plans this week, at least make his acquaintance and consider having him on your shows in the future. He's very engaging (for a historian) and insightful.

Cool to see your live broadcast, and especially to hear what you hear in your ear. Thanks for the peek.

I also like 2 show names that have been suggested by others: "Nightcap" or "Progress Report". The worry with Nightcap is if they ever moved up your timeslot.

Aw!

What do people have against historians?? Thomas Frank said as a grad student in Washington he used to have to lie and say he was a young Republican, or people would just walk away at parties.

I hope Rachel has tons of young historians on her staff ready to dig out the real information after the DNC hype is over, to trace the careers, the records, the patterns, the consequences, and put things into perspective. Details, please!

While Pat was ranting....CSPAN was showing what was real!

I am not sure that I like your commitment to MSNBC. I hope you are not having to adhere to their guidelines and talking points. Can you even see or hear what is going on? While Pat was ranting and telling you how Kerry's speech wasn't strong enough, nobody was going against McCain, etc etc I was watching C SPAN and all the "unimportant for MSNBC" military speakers were talking anti torture, pro vet's benefits, anti Osama etc. I am sick of Pat in his made up reality talking about things that are not true trying to sway the sheeple to his point of view. Sorry Rachel I have to change it back to the Span!

Not Just Me!

As a kid, I LOVED the roll call of the states. Loved loved loved it. If I missed the rest of a convention, I always watched the roll call. I got so upset when TV networks stopped covering it. Now, this year, it's on at 5:30 in the afternoon? But Rachel saved us! She brought us at least part of the roll call, including the climactic moment, allowing me to hear it on the podcast. Thank you, Rachel! I'm as giddy as...you are.

Roll Call!

I just listened to the podcast and heard Rachel and the roll call. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who crys at the process!

I got home just in time last night to see it live. What a thrill!

GO DEMS!!!

RIP: Del Martin, 87, pioneering lesbian activist

Because Rachel spoke so highly of her, her life and her life's work...

From the San Jose Mercury-News...

DEL MARTIN, 87, PIONEERING LESBIAN ACTIVIST
http://www.mercurynews.com/samesexmarriage/ci_10320317

Del Martin, a strident and eloquent voice in the early gay and lesbian civil rights movement in America, died Wednesday in San Francisco not long after enjoying perhaps the hardest-won prize of her lifelong cause — legal marriage to Phyllis Lyon, her longtime partner. Martin was 87.

Visiting the Josey Packard and The Alembic -- What to drink?

To Dr. Maddow and my fellow TRMS compatriots,

The S.O. and I will be visiting San Francisco this weekend, and it is my sole desire to go to The Alembic and order a cocktail from the illustrious Josey Packard. Is there a drink for which that either she or the rest of The Alembic's crew is known? (If it helps, my drink of choice is a gin gibson.)

Thanks much!

Alembic

I have made this pilgrimage. I was fortunate enough to arrive at a time when the bar was mostly empty. I first ordered a whiskey sour, which is my drink of choice then, with liquid courage inside, I asked Josey to make me "something fabulous" of her choice. It worked out well. All I recall (not drunk, just forgetful) is that it contained rye and chartreuse, and was a nice color. Also, the Alembic has an extensive cocktail menu, available on the web and at the bar, which is worth a read.

Speaking of Which - Anybody Reported UPPER-CASE TROLL FOR MCCAIN

yet?

He still exists, so I suspect not....

Keep on Weepin' On!

Rachel,
I'm listening to you on podcast and I'm getting misty-eyed. You go right ahead and weep. It is a time to be that involved that we all can weep, laugh and love the right stuff at the right time. Especially now when we have so much about which to be angry and cynical.
I am proud to be another person in the audience who gets shivers and misty at hearing the National Anthem. Keep up the excellent work fellow sappy civics geek.

Joe Scarborough And Truth

Joe has been given a free-pass since the day he showed up at his Congressional Office and abruptly quit, without ever explaining his actions to the constituents who voted for him to do a job they trusted he would carry out. I know that "good-old-boy" system works; and I know that behind every "attitude-case" is a similar story. But the next time he uses his "experience" as an elected official as a shield to protect himself from a poorly thought-out statement, he should be asked about his entire "experience" in Congress, that would include his last day. Joe has nothing to be proud of, including his silence on Lori Klausitis's body that was fouind in his Congressional office.

DRDARKEMY

YOUR ARE SAYING GRUMPY ACTUALLY IS A FAG ,DAMN I KNEW YOU WOULD KNOW THAT SINCE IT TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE !!!!! LET IT RAIN MCCAIN !!!! CLINTON 2012 !!!!

Good choice,

That's the one I use Cap'n.

ATTN:CPN CRUSTY AND POLLY TICS

GET OVER IT YOU OBAMA NUTZ AND AGREE TO DIS AGREE !!!! MY THOGHTS ARE IT WILL RAIN MCCAIN IN NOVEMBER MY FRIENDS !!!!!

Breaking my "ignore" rule

It's not a matter of "agree/disagree", it's your disrespectful attitude. If you want to have a rational discussion about our disagreements, fine, no problem. But you've proven that you don't. Instead, you'd rather bellow (in all-caps) a lot of mindless right-wing, racist crap, capped off by the incomprehensible refrain, "LET IT RAIN MCCAIN", while pretending to be some kind of disenfranchised Cintonista. Sorry, sonny, but you come across more as a GOP drone looking to cause disruption in the opposing party than someone with a reasonable beef.

So here's the deal, MikeInVA/demo4mccain/CLINTON2012: you play nice, you can stay. But if you start up with the "fag" garbage again, I'm going to continue to work to boot you out of here. Capiche?

Oh, and by the way, once again I have to tell you, "I'M NOT FOR OBAMA". I hope the all-caps makes that plain to you.

"If you want a picture of the future of Man, it is a boot in a human face--forever."--George Orwell

CAPN GET OVER IT !

I USE CAPS FOR CONVENIECE DUDE ( I AM A NOVICE WITH THE KEY BOARDS ) DO YOU ACTUALLY HOLD YOUR HANDS OVER YOUR EARS WHEN U SEE CAPS ,, DUDE GET A LIFE, LET IT RAIN MCCAIN !!!!

Rachel's coverage last nite

WOW - WOW - WOW - WOW

I just happened to be in the car when Rachel got the divine inspiration last night to listen in on the floor vote. Own up girl - you are psychic to tune in just as the most incredibly moving moment in history was happening live right then. To hear the states yielding the floor to New York and then Hillary calling for an Aclaimation (did I get that right?) I have goosebumps all over just typing.

Thank you Rachel for making politics real for me. And for just a moment - we were all political geeks together!

Cant wait for the new show! - Show title ideas:

Who could possibly be MORE cool?

Rachel-
My word, is it just great to be you right about now? I've been listening to and learning from you since the first minutes of Air America and now to watch you blooming out onto a national stage....Oh,my God, they're actually LISTENING to you out there in the void...and YOU, stuck next to comb-over there on the Democratic convention coverage....priceless.
I can't think of anybody who deserves this success more, and we all have to be grateful, as Americans, for your presence on the national news front lifting the quality of discourse....Go,Rachel,go...

McCain's Self-serving ad

Sure, John McCain withheld his VP bomb til Friday. What character he displayed. But he had to pipe in on Obama's big night with that self-indulgent ad congratulating Obama on being the first black candidate. As if that cheeky little move would render the critical statements in Barak's speech less effective.

Maybe Obama should graciously reciprocate and run an ad just before McCain takes to the podium to accept the nod and trash his record and vision. "John, congrats on being the oldest person ever to garner a first-time nomination of a major party. Shrewd move that you are accepting this late at night. Go get em grumpy."

Weekend buzz...

I know this is sheer gossip, but Google has been buzzing all weekend. Someone sent me an email and to me to go to Google and type, "Is Trig Sarah's baby?". I did and DOZENS of replies popped up...pages and pages written by Gov. Palin's Alaskan constituents. Apparently, the GOP did very little vetting on the governor while the Alaskans did a lot of "venting".

Here's another tidbit on another story: Since I live in Broward, can't get the vote right, County, Florida. We had a primary election this past Tuesday to try out our new multi-million dollar voting machines. When I showed them my ID, I was given a long sheet of paper inside a folder and was instructed to mark my ballot with a graphite pencil inside an oval next to the person I was voting for. I was warned by an official that if I didn't stay inside the lines of the oval, my vote wouldn't count. The booths were dark and I had to remove the ballot each time to see where the oval was. THEN we stuck this long sheet into a 'counter' and left. (no paper trail at all). I tuned in the 11PM local news to see the results only to hear that there were problems with the new machines. Since the 'workers' had been up since 4:30 am, they asked to go home and sleep until 8:30 am and come back since the 'counting' machines were not tallying the totals. When 8:30am arrived, most of the workers called in to ask if they could wait until noon. Permission was given. However all the precincts with the faulty counters had to be hand counted one by one oval after oval. By 7:00pm, there were still no results. We had an 11% turnout. If this had been the Presidential election...it would've been another trip to the Washington Supreme Court. The end of the second evening. Most of the results were in and counted. BUT...get ready...the news said that we'd be using these same new machines come November 4th. So I guess McCain will be elected by five Supreme Court justices. I thought I'd warn you in advance.
I can't wait for your new show!!!
